Agassi vs. Blake

Patrick McEnroe on PTI today siad this match could end up a classic.

The first two sets it looked like it might be a dud. Blake stormed ahead, winning them 6-3, 6-3. But Agassi doesn't quit and keep sworking hard. Some of the games he had to win he won them through very hard work. Agassi took the next two sets, 6-3, 6-3 and the 5th set just started.

It turned out to be a GREAT match (might just get me watching tennis regularly again). Anyone else watching this? I can't beleive Agassi is 35 and stil leven able to stand after what he's done already.

Not watching, but the combination of Agassi's veteran performances this week & the feelgood story that is Blake did manage to bring the Open into my consciousness for the first time in Icantrememberwhen, I even had a conversation with my wife about this match earlier today.

Freakin' directv screws me again. For some reason we get the east coast feeds for cable channels, so their coverage cut off at 9:30 pacific--but of course, we can't get the CBS east feed.

Damn. Was really pulling for James. Oh, well. I don't mind Agassi. Maybe he can knock off Robo-Federer for his swan song.

Wow. That was one hell of a match. Absolutely amazing shots and rallies in the 5th set.

Yeah, the back and forth in that 5th set was great. I've been a fan of Agassi ever since I started watchign tennis (I remember when he had hair!) so I was obviously pulling for me. But I'll be keeping an eye on Blake in the future.

I just hope this match didn't take so much out of Agassi that he loses the next match. I think he would lose to Federer (I think everyone would lose to Federer) in the finals, but it'd be great for him to just make it to the finals.

I miss Pete Sampras. I really believe that he would still be playing and doing well if it weren't for the whole disgusting hair situation.

Wow! I was fixing my home PC tonight and I should have turned on the match, but I was afraid it would distract me. Amazing performance from Agassi.

The comparison to Connors making runs late in his career are inevitable. I don't know if Agassi still has enough in the tank to win a major, but if he's going to win it will be the U.S. Open. It would certainly be a great story.

Funny thing with the comparison to Connors, at what I believe was Connors last match at the U.S. Open, he played Agassi in I think the quarters or semis when Andre was just pup. Agassi finally took control late in the match and Connors was just running out the string. In one of the last games, Connors was getting ready to serve when a voice from the crowd boomed, "Come on, Jimmy, he's a wus, you're a legend!" Connors cracked up and lobbed the ball into the stands in the guy's direction while Andre just bounced back and forth looking like he was trying not to cry because everyone was rooting against him.

How times change. They will be going nuts for him this weekend.

I could see him beating Ginepri, but facing Federer would be more of a classic torch-passing match. Which of course has its own appeal.

The women's side has been quite boring, so it is great that the men's side has put up some great matches. One of the best Opens in a while.

I can't say I've watched more than an hour of tennis in my life but last night, I was flipping through the stations and stumbled upon this. Did a double take at the "live" in the corner and my clock and decided to watch the last, um, set (I think- I don't know my tennis lingo)? The one where it was tied 6-6 (well, it was 6-5 when I turned it on). That was absolutely riveting for a sport I know nothing about- very cool to see. It's kindof like if I stumble across Tiger Woods making a great shot- I know it's a great shot and it's cool to see but there's no way I could watch an entire golf tourney.

How many hours did this entire match take?

SI

Which is somewhat short for a 5 set match.

I was there on Sunday and watch the end of a 5 set match between Srichipan and Sanguenetti that last nearly 4.5 hours.

I went to sleep after Blake won the first 2 sets and was very surprised that Agassi came back.

This was a great match to watch, well the last set anyway... but I too was confused about why it ran until 1:15 AM when it was only a 2:51 match? Did the match before it run really long?

Yes, the match before it was over 2 hours between Davenport and Dementieva. The first match started at 7:30 and the Blake-Agassi match started about 10:20.
