CRPG Single Player Games
Does anybody want another CRPG SP game like the Baldur's Gate series or the Icewind Dale Series? What the hell happened to all these fine SP RPG games that were coming out?
Now it's all Massive MP worlds and real-time strategy "war" games. I guess Dungeon Siege II should get my interest, but I prefer the D&D rulesets to the point were I expect them to be a part of my RPG game. I thought these SP games were wildly successful and made lots of money? Oh well, just thinking out loud on my all-time favorite type of computer game. BTW - I don't even see any in the works except NWN2 which is not due until '06. But I personally prefer a SP party-based system like the Black Isle stuff w/ story line. Maybe I have just been spoiled up until now...but I want new D&D stuff! ![]() |

Well they didn't make lots of money, it's a niche market..albeit a bigger niche than most, but they're not huge money makes like shooters or RTS's.
I know Bioware is working on Dragon Age, a new license RPG with I believe a SP focus..and NWN2 is being worked on by someone, Obsidian? Fallout 3 is supposedly in the pipeline as well. There's also The Witcher coming out..from someone, using the NWN engine, it could be Bioware but I was thinking it was someone else actually. Really for pure old school bliss, Genforge/Avernum is the way to go, not D&D though. I'm at a point where I want something different, I'm actually kinda sick of the traditional D&D World. Bring back some Post-Apocalyptic stuff! Or some Steampunk! Give us something new. |

was just playing NWN today actually, and yes, I'd love another game like Baldurs or Icewind.

i still fire up baldur's gate II every now and then. I know the engine's a little dated, but I really love playing that style of game (visually speaking).

You know I bought the game. Then I read about all of the horrofic bugs and such (people were claiming the game melted their computer down). I heard it was patched up, but I never went back to it. I don't think I ever even installed it. I love these types of games, though I sort of prefer turn-based to even the "pausable" Baldur's Gate type action. I think it the last one I played was Icewind Dale and I just got frustrated with the AI. I spent far too much time during fights with my wizard running around like a keystone cop while some monster was trying to beat him down. I would then have to set up "blockers" to intercept the monster who was 100% completely fixated on killing that mage. It really detracted from the "drama" of the fights.

Fable comes out soon for PC... Not a multi party member game but a nice and fun single player game.

Load it, patch it, and give it a shot. It has its problems, but it its really a great game. I only wish you could play it multi-player, and that it was a little longer. |

Play it. It's the best turn-based combat in an RPG out there. It had problems, but man was the combat great. I played it without the patches and really enjoyed it, bugs and all. It got a little too repetitive for me as you worked further through the temple, but if you already have it...fire it up. I know there was a fan made patch that added a bunch of stuff also. Really though, the best RPGs to come out in the last several years don't fit your wants at all, and those are the Gothic games. |

I think I lent it to my brother, but I will get it back for him. I was totally psyched about this game when it came up (and before). It sounded like exactly the type of thing I've been wanting for years, a souped up, updated version of the old D&D "gold box" games.

I completely agree. Fortunately, Dungeon Siege 2 is a fun game, but I'd love to see a game in the vein of Baldur's Gate 2 come out. |

I love these games and I'm actually in the middle of one that I missed a few years ago when it came out - Planescape: Torment.
Fun. Fun. Fun. I personally prefer the first person and I'm anxiously awaiting the release of the Indigo Prophecy from Atari which is more X-Files-ish, but the game concept seems pretty cool: You play the hunted and the hunter. You have to try to outsmart yourself. |

if you are looking for a d&d style game, and havent already played it, try to find a Wizardry 8...it is a couple years old, but was an excellent game...the new Bard's Tale was pretty decent, but very linear, and if you want a good diablo clone, try Sacred.

I was just looking, and it does look like there are a good many mods out for TOEE. I think my friend has my copy ofthe game, but I'm going to try to get it back from him and try some of them out. There is also someone working on a new module for TOEE, Keep on the Border Lands. That would be so cool.

Absolutely, that was my appreciation of the D&D ruleset is that you could use modules to keep it "fresh". Keep on the Borderlands was actually the first module I ever saw and played. ToEE was tried and hated by me (because of the bugs) but perhaps I should give it another go. I know they were planning on doing "Against The Giants" but I don't think Atari is using that game engine anymore. |

Arcanum is a game that I enjoyed quite a bit. I would also have to say that at the current time, there a a number of indie RPGs that are good. Geneforge 3 is pretty good (you can even demo this game) and Fate is like a Diablo clone (more of a casual game that you can demo as well). I also was a sucker for Fallout Tactics if you like to combine strategy with RPG. Mostly all the RPGs that Bethseda Softworks (http://www.bethsoft.com) makes, I am pretty much going to get with a few exceptions (Pirates of the Caribbean being one of them).

yah, there was a fall-out on the engine when the developer, Atari, and WOTC kept fighting. It sucks because the engine was far better than any other D&D engine that I've played. |

Wow, a Keep on the Borderlands game... That'd be amazing. It was the first module I ever played as well, at the ripe young age of 6. First 30 feet there's a pit. To the left the giant rats, to the right the kobolds. The mad hermit, the medusa... Such good times.

Like Calis said, keep on the lookout for the release of Dragon Age . I've been waiting and waiting for another BG type game, and this may be it.
And Fallout3 is defintly in development by Bethesda, the guys behind the Elder Scrolls games. Last edited by jeff061 : 09-09-2005 at 10:55 AM. |

Wow...I had no idea that Bethseda got the rights to Fallout and I visit their site often. It should be interesting to see how this game will be develop since they have a different way of approaching the game than the original developers of the game. |

Yeah, Black Isle was working on it under Interplay and had some screenshots and everything. But Interplay closed down and sold the rights to Bethesda, who I believe outbid Troika(the original Fallout guys).
Interview with Bethesda on Fallout3. Other than this they have been dead silent. Last edited by jeff061 : 09-09-2005 at 11:18 AM. |

I really liked ToEE, but I agree that it did get repetitive in the temple. I loved Baldur's Gate 1+2 also.
Slightly different style of game, but I loved Morrowind and really look forward to Obsidian too. |

You should be able to find TOEE for $10 on the bargain racks. A patch is available, and there are also several mods, fixing rules and gameplay errors and allowing higher levels for the characters. Can't tell you a lot about the gameplay, as I had barely started it and loaned it to my brother when he went back to school.
