Ping: Atlanta Residents/Georgians
I'm wondering if any of you might be able to offer some opinions on Kennesaw. I have an opportunity to apply for a job there and was wondering if it would be worth the time to go through the process. All I know about the area is that the population is roughly 75,000 and that it's 20 miles from downtown Atlanta. There also seem to be some interesting Civil War sites nearby if I remember correctly. Any info/advice would be much appreciated.

Depending on what you're looking for in an area, it might suit you just fine. Like most of Cobb County, it's very sub-divisiony, got a decent mall & shopping areas probably less than 5 miles from pretty much any Kennesaw address. Traffic-wise, SD makes a good point about that area, if you're heading north (away from downtown ATL) instead of south (into the teeth of the tiger) then you might not have a traffic problem at all. Otherwise though ... oof.
You're also correct about the battlefield, you can get a little more about the Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park at http://www.nps.gov/kemo/ Also home to the Southern Museum of Civil War & Locomotive History http://www.southernmuseum.org/ Also check out http://www.kennesaw.ga.us/ (city website) http://www.kennesaw.edu/ (Kennesaw State College website) http://www.cobbcvb.com/homepg/index.html (Cobb County visitors guide) Hope that helps.

Kennesaw is a very nice area and has grown quite a bit in the past decade, and continues to do so. It is close enough to Atlanta/downtown that if you want to check out a Braves/Falcons/Thrashers game it isn't a big deal.
If I had to pick up and move, Kennesaw is certainly an area I would consider.

Aside from the police and the beginning of Redneck Ga., Kennesaw is a great place to live. Nice roads, everything is new, good schools.. The traffic can be bad at times but if you live and work there that will make a big difference. Heading to downtown is a 30min trip with no traffic, but much longer if you need to go downtown during any high volume traffic time. Everything including housing if much cheaper there, my apartment in Buckhead which cost $1200 for a 2 bedroom may only be 750-900 in Kennesaw.. |

KSU is largely a commuter college. At least it used to be, and I don't think they have done much to change it. Being from the area, I can't really speak to the reputation academically. I know that at times they have fielded some very competitive athletic teams with Basketball, baseball and softball coming to mind.
I think KSU typically attracts local students that want to stay close to home and/or are a little intimidated by the larger college campuses around (UGA, Ga Tech, Auburn, etc.)

You are right on Buzzbee. They have had some decent sports teams in the past. Atleast 3 of my friends goto Kennesaw and all live in our around the school area. Many of the students seem to be a bit older than UGA, TECH, Auburn, more like my alma matter Georgia State. Many of friends say they enjoy going to school there although this is the only spot all 3 have attended. They also report that the eye-candy is top notch. ![]() |

Still in effect, I believe. A quick search brought up the following sites which seem to indicate the law is still in effect.
http://publicrights.org/Kennesaw/GOA_support.html http://www.gunowners.org/pr0314.htm http://publicrights.org/Kennesaw/Demographics.html That last link has some demographic info that ajax might be interested in, as well as the actual ordinance.

For those too lazy to click:
Code of Ordinances & Gun Law Sec. 34-1 Heads of households to maintain firearms. (a) In order to provide for the emergency management of the City (county), and further in order to provide for and protect the safety, security and general welfare of the city (county) and its inhabitants, every head of household residing in the City (county) limits is required to maintain a firearm, together with ammunition therefore. (b) Exempt from the effect of this section are those heads of households who suffer a physical or mental disability, which would prohibit them from using such a firearm. Further exempt from the effect of this section are those heads of households who are paupers or who conscientiously oppose maintaining firearms as a result of beliefs or religious doctrine, or persons convicted of a felony.

Wow. So just what would I be getting myself into?
I do have to admit that I like the idea of warmer weather and living in a small/mid-size town near a larger metropolitan area.Last edited by Ajaxab : 09-14-2005 at 06:40 PM. |

If your thinking small/mid-size town, your going to be disappointed. Think urban sprawl reaching out for 40 some odd miles from Atlanta.
