Short Cuts on DTV

Anyone watching or TIVOing any of these? You sign up for a SuperFan (a must if you have HDTV) and they play these on stations 731 and 732 throughout the day on Tuesday and Wednesday. They take the game and only show the plays, about 30 minutes a game.

I was off of work today and watched some of them. Some of the things that really stuck me about this weeks games after watching them:

The key to the Broncos defense in the second half on Sunday? Gerrard Warren. When you watch just him on all of the defensive snaps in the second half, he was getting penetration and blowing up the SD offensive interior on 90% of the plays he was in the game. Just simply tore them up. That allowed the LB's to come free. Wilson tacked LT about 4 or 5 times within 3 yards of the LOS because Neal had to help block Warren and could never get to Wilson.

Brandon Lloyd may never be a great receiver, but he makes some of the best catches I've ever seen on a seemingly weekly basis.

Cadillac Williams was the best RB in this draft. The only question I have about him is how long he can hold up with that running style.

The Raiders lost the game on Sunday night due to horrible officiating. I despise the Raiders and love seeing them lose, but man there were some bad calls in that game.

The Ravens are horrible. What happened to that offensive line?

Initially, I was shocked that someone on FOFC dedicated a thread to the Robert Altman film.

i hate the fact that they ripped out the HD games and put them in some special package while charging the same amount for the standard package as last year. then they automatically charged my account for this. I told them that if they change what they offer they certainly cant automatically resign me up. I wont be buying superfan this year on ethics alone.

Wow. Didn't automatically charge me and I've had their HD package for awhile now. I had to add the Superfan package.

I'd have been pissed too.

It's not just adding the games that were in HD last year though. Last year they had about 2 or 3 HD games on a week, depending on the week. This year, they have 6-8 games a week in HD. I really do like the Short Cuts package alone though. I can TIVO all of em and watch them throughout the week. Also allows me to look for specific things and watch the critical plays.

Actually, Troy, the number of HD games has remained exactly the same as last year. 6 on Fox (which means virtually all of the Fox games) and 3 CBS games every week are in HD. Last year, the number for each network were the same, and they were all included as part of Sunday Ticket (if you subscribed to the HD pack). As for the other features, I am underwhelmed by them - I hardly ever use them and would not pay for them. Its pretty much $50 for the HD games.

Since I don't have HD, that package is pretty worthless. Once the games end, I have little use for watching the highlights during the rest of the week - that's for baseball (and soon) hockey. I did enjoy the Red Zone Channel, though. I would have made use of that if it came with the regular subscription. The 8 games on one screen thing is utterly useless - I liked what they did last year, with the scrolling scores on those two channels so you could decide what to quickly change to. At least on that screen, you had one watchable game, not 8 miniature boxes that you can barely see.

I hate having to pay the extra $50 for HD ... but I did anyways. Sigh.

The Game Mix channel could be cool (shows six games at once) ... but you need an interactive TV to change the volume between the games. Who the heck has one of those? Result: watched it for 2 minutes.

Redzone Channel - Ok if you don't mind someone else blindly switching the channels for you to capture potential scoreing events. I'd rather control the clicker myself personally. Result: watched it for 1 minute.

Shortcuts: Pretty cool IMO, especially if you miss a game and you want to see all the action for your favorite team. Love how they condense it to like 30 minutes (although it makes me sad how much fluff is in a regular broadcast). Good addition IMO.

Weekly Highlights - despite having a TIVO DVR, I'm not getting the weekly highlights package. I didn't get it last year either. ??? Is there something you have to do to get these automatically recorded on your DVR ... or do I need to call customer service?

I thought the package was $99? Is that a discounted price for previous subscribers?

I wouldn't have been, considering it featured a bottomless Julianne Moore (in her full redheaded glory). I was actually disappointed it was about football...

The nakedness in that movie was pretty nice, but the rest of it was horrible. I hated that movie. It just felt like it would never, ever end.

Buy a bigger TV.

Well sure, if you're actually watching the whole movie. Then it sucks.

Yeah ... unfortunately though they don't show GameMix in HD mode (16:9) which makes no sense to me since most folks with the SuperFan have HD Tv's. So even on a widescreen, it gets cropped down to 4:3 (so it doesn't fill up the bigger screen).

My issue with Sunday Ticket is the new blackout rules imposed by the NFL, where if you want to watch a game that your local station is broadcasting, you can't watch it in Sunday Ticket, even if you can't get the HD version off your local channels. If I'm paying extra for the HD games, I better be getting them all.

That's made ST not worth it for me. I'm a Pats fan, so I end up missing many Pats games, but I end up making do with the Panthers' games.
