OT-if youre grammatically challenged, you need one of these!
'
An apostrophe. Dig it. You + are = You're. Something that belongs to you = your Ex's: You're going to your house, right? Is your car still parked at the place you're working these days? Are you sure that your nickname doesn't have anything to do with the fact that you're grammatically challenged? All intended with the utmost good will |

Great thread
..I bumped this from your FTB.. because I have similar pet peeves, but have also had a few things pointed out to me (one quite humerously so) on IHOF that I do incorrectly...

Yep...apostrophes are also used to denote letters that have been removed for abbreviated words. Hence, "Ex's" for "Examples". Last edited by NoMyths : 05-24-2007 at 03:21 PM. |

W't.
(ETA: Non-standard contractions are generally too open to misinterpretation to be considered correct usage. As long as we are going to be pedantic grammatically, that is. I don't care either way, just explaining my little jab). Last edited by MJ4H : 05-24-2007 at 04:00 PM. |

Generally, this is true, but for obvious contractions it's no big concern, and "Ex" for "example" is common. The Romans were much worse about such things. And I'm minted to validate pretty much any usage I decide on these days. ![]() (No worries...grammar police friendly-fire incidents tend to be amusing ones in which to participate) ![]() |
