A very frustrating weekend of football

Start out with Washington State just lighting up Oregon State in the first half, and then collapsing and losing the game in the second. Classic case of "Coug-ing" it. Throw in the significant injuries to probably our two best players, LB Will Derting and WR Jason Hill, and my Saturday sucked.

On to Sunday. The Vikings get toasted, outright dominated. The Seahawks lose in OT to the !@#$% REdskins when the kicker "doinks" a last second 48-yard FG. Meanwhile, my fantasy teams are up against guys like McNabb, Burress, and Harrison, while I of course play guys who don't score and sit guys who do. Lovely.

Can't be as bad as me last week in Fantasy Football. The guy I played had everyone who scored 3-4 TD's EACH, and the only player who got me something was basically Carson Palmer. I lost 247-75. I went on sportsline that Monday morning, and every player excep this TE and K scored 40 or better points, and I had pretty much 0 zero to single digits for my guys.

Couged-it? I would say this was a case of Beaving-it, but then we would just get 50 progressively more juvenile posts.

But you have to admit that based on the first half that was WSU's game to win or lose, and we pissed it away. Unfortunately, it's quite a familiar pattern for Cougar games. Anyone who saw the Notre Dame game two seasons ago saw that in peak form.

I completely agree, just giving you a hard time. I didn't see the game so I don't know how any of those second half turnovers happened, but from watching the Beavers play defense the rest of the year I'm willing to bet most of them were WSU's fault.
But look on the bright side, at least UW didn't hold on in Los Angeles. That would have made this week really hard to indure.

Not laughing at all, the Huskies looked pretty good in that game. I was even pulling for them in that one, may be what did them in.
I think there could be a 7 team tie for fourth place this year in the pac-10.

Before last Saturday, I figured the only games remaining on the schedule we had a shot in were the last 3, and by no means were any of those to be considered anything other than maybes at best - 4-7 if everything went right, 1-10 if they didn't. Now I think we've got a shot against Oregon, and I'm feeling better about our chances for the last 3.

Nothing is set in stone of course, but for the first time in the last 2 years I'm feeling optimistic about the rest of the season.

I'll tell you what though, the passing games of OSU and WSU will be tough for our horribly depleted CB group to handle.

We're in agreement there. I think you'll find that neither WSUCougar nor I have an overriding hatred for each other's team. Maybe it's just our circumstances, maybe the UW/WSU rivalry isn't as heated as others.

Oregon on the other hand, I can't stand and will almost always root against.

My Pac-10 "rooting" list, from favorite to least-favorite:

1. WSU (obviously)
2. UW (lots of friends went there, plus it reflects on my home state & area)
3. Arizona State (always seem to have a spunky offense)
4. Cal (until recently, always an outmanned underdog)
5. Oregon State (a relatively gentle regional foe)
6. Arizona (we always seem to struggle against them)
7. Stanford (too many memories of Elway lighting us up)
8. USC (a long string of losses and frustrating fades)
9. Oregon (inevitably a shoot-out game that is never really over until 0:00)
10. UCLA (used to paste us in my formative years; a bitter hatred)

7. UW (Sorry dawgfan, but Huskies were the only fans who would talk shit to Beaver fans in the mid 90’s, we were horrible and you still talked)
8. UCLA (sense of entitlement far outpaces their on field performance)
9. USC (see above, even when there the best team in the country)
10. UC Eugene (cheering for them to lose isn't enough, I want injuries too)

It's been the most frustrating weekend in a while here in the KC-ish area. Sports talk has just been awful and contrary to popular belief, it can be good here from time-to-time as they have a couple of decent hosts in town that steer things in interesting directions.

On Saturday, the closest game for the three area universities was KU's 30-17 loss to Texas Tech. Oklahoma blasted K-State 43-21 and Texas crushed Mizzou 51-20.

Then the Chiefs jump out to a 23-6 lead and lose to the Eagles. That inherently would make any weekend crappy because then it means that's all anyone wants to bitch and whine about and there's not much the hosts can do.

Never mind that the Royals topped last year's record 104 losses with 106 over the weekend and faded quietly into the night.

It was a horrible day on Saturday for my football hopes as well. I generally root for Indiana teams and the Big Ten. EVERY game that I was watching hopefully for ended up going the way I didn't want it to. The following teams all disappointed me.

Notre Dame
Purdue
Indiana
Penn State

The only saving grace this weekend was that Notre Dame lost. And IU stayed in there pretty well with Iowa, and came back to within 3 in the 4th quarter before things went downhill. Still, the Hoosiers showed a lot of heart, and Blake Powers and James Hardy are really tearing things up.

As good as Saturday was, great last minute win by Michigan and a great last minute loss by Notre Dame, it was all washed away by another absolutely abysmal performance by the Lions offense.

I have never been more disgusted watching an offense in all my football watching life. They can't run the ball (2.2 yards per carry). They can't run block for shit (see above yards per carry average). They can't pass block for shit (7 sacks). Even the few times Joey Ballgame has time back there he is wildly off target and simply hits the "checkdown" receiver. Their defense had 4 turnovers, 2 of which were returned for touchdowns and they stil lost.

Here is how the final three posessions went.

After a 86 yard pass to Marcus Pollard the Lions had the ball first and goal from the 5. With a chance to go up 10, the Lions had to settle for a field goal. 20-14.

The Lions defense holds, pushing Carolina back. The offense gets the ball back with about 3:30 left. Three and out.

Carolina gets the ball back and the amazing duo of Weinke and Proehl (who must rank up there with Montana to Rice, Manning to Harrison, etc.) orchestrate a daring last minute touchdown. 21-20.

RW McQuarters returns the ensuing kickoff to the 49 yard line. The Lions have 23 seconds to get into field goal range. Four incomplete passes. Game over.

In those last three possessions (outside of the 86 yard pass) the Lions managed -2 yards of offense.

The Lions would have a more effective offense if they just handed the other team the ball on first down and let their defense take over.

It's f*cking pathetic. Joey is not the only one to blame. The coaching has sucked. The line has sucked. The running game goes nowhere. The receivers have dropped passes. The unit is pathetic.

Great weekend for me. My favorite two college teams had good games. Nick Hartigan had another huge game (245 rushing yards) for my alma mater, while Hawaii's run-and-shoot did what they do best: pile up garbage-time yardage against a hapless opponent.

Good point. However, I was still disappointed by the loss. I guess it was so difficult because all four of those teams lost by such close margins and in such frustrating fashions. They could all have disappointed me more by not being as competitive as they were, but for some reason 4 blowouts would sit a little better with me right now I think. At least ONE of those close games could've gone the way I'd liked! If either ND, IU or PSU would've pulled out a win I think it would have really saved my day. (I had already written off Purdue by Saturday, so a win by them wouldn't have done much for me)

Scary thing is....that play on Leinart, that knocked the ball out of his hands, was awesome, and I look at it like this....that ball stays inbounds....game over....it rocketed out of his hands I was shocked....

The talk radio here today was talking about Bush and his assistance....now the replays I have been watching, he was actually grabbing Leinart and pushing, which is, illegal, and the fans have a right to bitch on that one...

Dude, it's been an AMAZING weekend. UTEP kicks butt on national tv, the Cowboys manage to take over first in the NFC East with the Giants victory, and well...we all know how the Astros are doing.

Klinglerware College Starter Join Date: Dec 2003 Location: The DMV	Great weekend for me. My favorite two college teams had good games. Nick Hartigan had another huge game (245 rushing yards) for my alma mater, while Hawaii's run-and-shoot did what they do best: pile up garbage-time yardage against a hapless opponent.
