ATLANTA (AP) - Atlanta Hawks center Jason Collier died Friday night, possibly of cardiac arrest, the team said.

Hawks spokesman Arthur Triche said no other details immediately were available.

The 7-foot, 260-pound Collier, a five-year NBA player, spent his first three seasons with Houston before joining Atlanta in 2003.

Atlanta Hawks center Jason Collier died early Saturday morning of an apparent heart attack. He was 28.

Collier experienced chest pains and his wife performed CPR and called 911.

Hawks players were notified of Collier's death at 9:30 a.m. Saturday morning before a scheduled workout was cancelled.

Collier, who played at Georgia Tech, was the longest tenured Hawk player, joining the team for the 2003-04 season after spending three seasons in Houston.

Collier played for Georgia Tech and was drafted by Milwaukee in the first round, with the 15th pick overall, in the 2000 NBA draft.

I don't know who is more foolish. Curry or Isiah for trading for him and NOT forcing him to take a DNA test

I think the guy is a fool. I read the Bulls offered to pay him $400,000 a year guranteed for the next 40 or 50 years if it came back he shouldn't play.
Now I know that he can possibly make a lot more playing but that's a hell of an insurance policy, 16 to 20 million and you don't have to risk your life to get it.
Very fair of the Bulls and stupid for Curry to turn down.

To be fair, I believe being that tall puts you at a higher risk for heart conditions.

I entered this thread thinking I was going to read about a Hockey player. When I got to the seven foot part, I thought "damn I bet he stood out on the Ice!" Then I looked at the thread title again, and "Hawks" registered.

Not to get too off topic here, but the Knicks gave him $50 million. Whether he plays or not, its his.

They can't even get the contract insured, but they can afford not to.

But the $400,000 a year was an offer if the results came back that would say that it was too dangerous for him to play, thus averting what could be a catastrophe.

What's the use of the $50 million to him, if it turns out that he can't play, and dies?

Not to sound morbid but if he doesn't play then it probably means that his lawyer is reading his will or his estate is busy trying to decide how to divide the money.

I do understand what you are saying though. 50 mil is sure a lot more than 20, I'm just saying not taking the 20 (and of course only if it was found he had a problem) without a risk to life is foolish.

From a guy who saw him play an awful lot at Tech, he was very well liked at GT. He'll be missed.

I still remember him fighting with Bobby Knight @ IU. All Bobby wanted was for him to stay in the paint and all he wanted to do was shoot 3's. It ended when he transfered to GT.

Was sad to hear he passed, he'll be missed.

He is taking the $50 million without any risk to his life. The contract can't be voided. He knew ahead of time that the Knicks would be there to give him this amount of money, whether he can play or not.

In my mind he risks his life every time he steps on the court to play without being tested and knowing for sure where he stands.

Maybe I'm just misuderstanding the situation. From what I know he is not going to take the test. Since he is not going to take the test he is going to play. So there's a good chance if he ends up not playing it is because he is dead. Unless of course he's lucky enough that medical personel at the game or practice can revive him.

Now if he can go out on his own and get a private test, be told he can't play, and then goes to the Knicks and says " Here's test results from my doctor that says I can't play so I'm here for my 50 mil, thanks." Then I stand corrected.
