Cost of a brake job

OK, so I really need to get my brakes done, they make this grinding noise everytime I use them so I think it is about time. Any idea on what it is gonna cost. I am sure I will end up at Midas or Walmart and I don't want to pay more then I need to. Any idea of a price range?

you could always call for some estimates.

It is also my understanding that you should get your pads changed before the noise occurs, because the noise essentially means the pads are worn completely off and you now have metal grinding against metal which could cause a whole other group of expenses.

Ouch.

If you're grinding, then you're probably metal on metal. Hopefully your rotors aren't warped up. Replacing your rotors and brake pads would ring up a bill -- just like Rasmuth mentioned.

If it's just the pads, and the rotors are still in good condition and can be resurfaced, then you're probably looking between $100-200.

EDIT: Hopefully, your car isn't vibrating as you come down to a halt.

IF you need to change the parts other than your pads.. if you just need to change your pads it shouldn't be nearly that expensive ($50-100).

It's still good practice to have your rotors resurfaced with each pad changing. Of course, if you've got the tools to do them yourself...well. That's another story!

I am in now way mechanical, but a friend helped/taught me how to change brake pads. It was a piece of cake. Learn how to do it yourself and save a couple of bucks.
