Do you know what today is..?

20 Years Later, Miner Miracle still Memorable

EL PASO, TX. - Some people refer to it as "the greatest upset in the history of college football" other simply call it "the Miner Miracle" and Wednesday it will be 20 years since it happened.

On October 26, 1985, the winless UTEP Miners shocked the world and BYU by beating the defending National Champs at the Sun Bowl. At the time, BYU was ranked 7th in the country and they were a nearly a 40 point favorite.

However one crucial play in the 2nd quarter, and the Miners began to pull away. Danny Taylor picked off QB Robbie Bosco and took it 100 yards for the touchdown. At the half the Miners led the Cougars 20 to 10.

In the 2nd half, BYU would cut the lead to 4, but never got any closer. In the waining seconds of the game Bosco's desperation heave into the endzone was intercepted. UTEP won the game 23 to 16.

That was the sole high point of the year, as it was UTEP's only win of the season. They finished the year 1-and-10 and Head Coach Bill Yung was replaced that off-season by Bob Stull. Mr. Yung still lives in El Paso and he is now a successful insurance executive.

The day after the game, ABC-7 ran a 30-minute special called the Miner Miracle and you can watch the entire show by clicking on the link provided.
