New reality show in the works?

http://apnews.myway.com/article/20051026/D8DFD9O07.html

LOS ANGELES (AP) - The Muppets could come back to primetime television with their own reality show. ABC has ordered a script and five episode outlines for "America's Next Muppet," in which viewers may join in choosing the newest member of the puppet family that includes Kermit the Frog and Miss Piggy, a network spokeswoman said Tuesday.

The premise has the ring of such shows as "American Idol" or "America's Next Top Model," in which the audience picks potential new stars.

ABC is part of the Walt Disney Co., which purchased the Muppets franchise from the Jim Henson Co. in 2004 and the right to use the characters in its theme parks, movies, TV shows and retail products. The ABC television movie "The Muppets' Wizard of Oz" aired earlier this year.

The late Jim Henson's Muppets got their first regular, widespread exposure on PBS'"Sesame Street" starting in 1969.

The syndicated "The Muppet Show" aired from 1976-81 and was seen in more than 100 countries. The characters also briefly starred in "Muppets Tonight," which aired for four months in 1996 as part of ABC's primetime lineup.

Henson's puppets moved to the big screen in 1979 with "The Muppet Movie," followed by movies including "The Great Muppet Caper" and "The Muppets Take Manhattan."

Oh, dear Lord. This is getting to be way too much. Jim Henson is likely spinning in his grave on this one.

This has some potential as a crossover show that appeals to kids and adult reality TV watchers. However, if they take it down the path of putting up a female puppet to create a rivalry with Miss Piggy for Kermit's affections, I'm officially through with non-sports TV.

In fact, I can't even believe I thought that potential story line up. Stupid TV rotting my brain!

Why don't they just bring back the original Muppet Show format? It would still work.

How in the hell would this qualify as a reality show? Are there actual living, breathing Muppets just waiting for their chance to join the cast??

I'm seriously asking (I'm very tired from watching the entire Game 3 of the World Series and may be missing the obvious joke here) because if it's a reality show spoof with Muppets, I'm all for it.

What? You mean you think those American Idol contestants are real people?
Or those on The Apprentice? Or America's Next Big Super Top Model?

I don't think this is meant to be as much "spoof" as it is a reality-show format that happens to be selecting a winner (of a popularity contest) from amongst foam rubber contestants.

I was proud of my son not wanting to sit through that whole piece of crap. He made it for like 20 minutes and came to his senses.

The Muppets lost it because they are no longer aimed at adults as they were. There are so many jokes that I never got as a kid, but now do when watching the Muppet Show.
