If you really think that then try and decide what is wrong with things and work out a series of things which you think are achievable which will make your life more enjoyable.

If it makes you feel better I felt that way when I was around 20 years old - I've left high school with 'reasonable' qualifacations and falled into working as a chef/takeaway manager - but it was pretty much a dead end career and I was bored stiff doing it (was never exactly a 'good' chef - think chopping things up and making basic dishes for market workers, the word 'chef' is probably overdoing it

) ...

Anyway after a bit of thought I went to night school, then eventually (having scraped a few reasonable grades) university and finally having qualified in software engineering onto programming and the games industry (which was my long term aim) ....

While at Uni I met several other people doing 'make-overs' on their lives in similar fashion, including a charming lass of 41 who was on the same course as me ... its never to late to improve your life or make yourself happy imho

Until you have a kid, the thought of "do overs" is always perched on your left shoulder. Kicking yourself for this and that, wishing you could've done this or that. I had a full scholarship to UVA and pissed it away in year 2 by drinking myself into academic probation.

I beat myself up every month or so for the life I could've had, had I stayed in school and continued with football.

Then, along came my daughter and now the thought of "do-over" is over. I can't imagine my life without her now and in hindsight, it all seems like the shitty stuff happened for a reason.

In all seriousness sab, I think you should investigate your real worth a little bit. Instead of concentrating on your programming projects when you have time, you could be writing a resume, and scouring the earth for places to send it. Don't worry about having all of the qualifications listed for any one job, if it sounds like something you'd like to do, send it. Writing job openings/descriptions can be as hard as writing resumes/covers. You may find yourself fitting what someone actually wants better than you fit the written posting.

Obviously, there is no guarantee, but you may find that what your parents can afford to pay is less than what someone else might, even with the cost of housing subrtacted. Just because you could not get a job then, does not mean you can't do better this time. If it does not work, you are no worse off, no?

Sorry to hear about your situation sab. If my 8 extra years of experience on you are worth anything, I'd say this - times of great stress and trial are usually the best ways to really help you focus on what your true priorities are. Also, focus as best you can on identifying within your goals smaller steps that will allow you to identify progress. It can be easy when faced with daunting situations to become overwhelmed at all that you need to do to; by giving yourself identifiable middle steps it allows you to feel some sense of accomplishment as you move forward.

As an aside, I can't say I wasn't surprised to see that a relationship breakup was a catalyst for this. Things will look better soon...

I think thinking more about the past will only make you feel worse. You will feel a lot better to think about what you can do NOW to improve your life. Think about it, you will probably look back again in 10 yeasrs just hoping once again that you could get a second chance and do it over from this point on, so why not do it right starting now and stop hoping for the impossible.
