Kenyan, 73, kills leopard with bare hands

Grandfather turns tables on attacking cat by grabbing tongue

NAIROBI - A 73-year-old Kenyan grandfather reached into the mouth of an attacking leopard and tore out its tongue to kill it, authorities said Wednesday. Peasant farmer Daniel M’Mburugu was tending to his potato and bean crops in a rural area near Mount Kenya when the leopard charged out of the long grass and leapt on him.

M’Mburugu had a machete in one hand but dropped that to thrust his fist down the leopard’s mouth. He gradually managed to pull out the animal’s tongue, leaving it in its death-throes.

“It let out a blood-curdling snarl that made the birds stop chirping,” he told the daily Standard newspaper of how the leopard came at him and knocked him over.

The leopard sank its teeth into the farmer’s wrist and mauled him with its claws. “A voice, which must have come from God, whispered to me to drop the panga (machete) and thrust my hand in its wide-open mouth. I obeyed,” M’Mburugu said.

As the leopard was dying, a neighbor heard the screams and arrived to finish it off with a machete.

M’Mburugu was toasted as a hero in his village Kihato after the incident earlier this month. He was also given free hospital treatment by astonished local authorities.

“This guy is very lucky to be alive,” Kenya Wildlife Service official Connie Maina told Reuters, confirming details of the incident.

Man battles buck with his bare hands, and wins

Arkansan subdues five-point whitetail deer that crashed through window

BENTONVILLE, Ark. - For 40 exhausting minutes, Wayne Goldsberry battled a buck with his bare hands in his daughter's bedroom.

Goldsberry finally subdued the five-point whitetail deer that crashed through a bedroom window at his daughter's home Friday. When it was over, blood splattered the walls and the deer lay on the bedroom floor, its neck broken.

Goldsberry was at his daughter's home when he heard glass breaking. He went back to check on the noise and found the deer.

"I was standing about like this peeking around the corner when the deer came out of the bedroom," said Goldsberry, demonstrating while peering around his kitchen wall. The deer ran down the hall and into the master bedroom — "jumping back and forth across the bed."

"I could tell he was really tearing up the place back there," Goldsberry said.

Goldsberry entered the bedroom to confront the deer and, after a brief struggle, emerged to tell his wife to call police. After returning to the bedroom, the fight continued. Goldsberry finally was able to grip the animal and twist its neck, killing it.

"He was trying to get up a corner wall and I just came in behind him and grabbed him by the horns and just started pushing down," said Goldsberry.

Goldsberry, sore from the struggle, dragged the dead animal out of the house.

"He got kicked several times. He was walking bowlegged for awhile," Deputy Doug Gay said.

Benton County Sheriff Keith Ferguson said that when he arrived he found the deer dead in the front yard. Goldsberry intended to have the deer processed for its meat.

Gay said that, this time of year, bucks that see their reflection in windows often charge them, believing the mirror image to be a rival.

On Monday in Pine Bluff, the principal of Coleman Elementary School rid his building of a deer by opening a door. Students were preparing for dismissal Monday when a deer crashed through a window and bounded through a hallway.

The buck floundered on the school's slick floor for about three minutes exiting via a door along the side of a hallway. Principal Bill Tietz said the deer was slightly injured from the glass and lost an antler. Tietz said the animal leapt a 6-foot fence after leaving the school.

What about the 8 year old girl that killed a bear?

Okay, she shot it with a rifle but it was still an 8 year old girl with a gun.

Why did that second dude have to kill the deer? For gods sake, just open the doors and let it leave!

1.) Why not? It's deer season.

2.) Wild animal charges into my house and starts ripping shit up. I go to deal with it and it starts bucking and kicking me. And I'm supposed to just let it leave so it can come back and do it again later, or possibly do the same thing to one of my neighbors? No. Wild animal screwing with me on my turf = I'm well within my rights to kill the thing. Hell, I'm well within my rights to kill a human being that does that. But not a deer?

3.) This guy gets props for killing the deer with his bare hands. Much manlier than the gun from distance. Much props.

4.) No, I don't hunt.

Now that's a method of deer hunting I can respect.

73 year old man gets jumped by a leopard and rips out it's tongue vs. a guy who wrestled a deer for 40 minutes, broke it's neck and will eat it?

You have to go to the "at a nuetral site in september, who would win head to head?" argument. Since I doubt that the 73 year old will be able to get his hands down the other guys throat and that also seems to be his primary defense, the deer wrestler would win in an upset, especially if it goes more than 2 rounds.

Each of those are pretty bad-ass. I'll tell you this though, the 73 year old had to do what he did to survive--the other guy decided to go in there (without a weapon!!) and fight a deer bare-handed. I'm not sure I would have made that decision. Actually, I'm positive I wouldn't have willingly chosen to fight that deer without at least a baseball bat or something.

Guy probably made up most of the deer story. Thing probably tripped and fell or something and broke it's neck. Then when the police shows up he spins quite a yarn.

I had to go with the leopard killer but I really like this line of reasoning

I guess I'm in the extreme minority.

The old guy must be tough as nails to defend himself from an attacking cat.

But willingly taking on a bucking deer in an enclosed area just seems on a different level of badassery. That's a big, strong animal in a very small space.

Yeah, thats my line of thought too. The old man is certainly a bad-ass for defending himself the way he did and essentially killing the leopard, but he didn't have a choice in the matter--it was life or death. This other yahoo could have just left the deer in there and called animal control or something, but WILLINGLY went in and fought the damn thing barehanded. That is totally bad-ass in my opinion (and incredibly
stupid ).
