A Good Day Turned Bad
Today started off full of promise. Mrs. Eaglesfan was working 7 to 7 and then going out with her new co-workers to welcome her to their group. Therefore, I had a plan to watch the triple header of football. First, I had Houston vs Jacksonville on the schedule. Ok, maybe not the most exciting game, but I could always play some Civ4 or some FM05 if the game became boring. Then, I had Steelers vs Packers and Bears at Saints. Excellent. Finally, I had the Eagles vs the Redskins. Wonderful. So, I drive out to the supermarket to buy a frozen pizza to cook up as well as a few healthier bits (but who I was kidding, I was eating some pizza while watching football.)
Then, it started going downhill. I was approaching the supermarket (and therefore only going about 15 or 20 as I would be turning soon) when I see a black ford explorer leaning out of the entrance to a nearby store. Next thing I know, the Black Ford Monstrosity is ramming into the right side of my little Toyota Echo. This lady pulled out of a parking lot and rammed me as I was driving by her! So, we pull over and she starts yelling at me! I realize at this point that I forgot my cell phone. So, I know that I have to go into the store to call the police. I memorize this lady's license plate in case she tries to drive off. She didn't. There was a police officer in the store who kindly used his radio to report the incident. Of course, the New Orleans Police are slightly understaffed now.. Therefore, it took over an hour for a unit to arrive to take the report. Not bad considering the situation here (no one hurt) but this lady seemed to blame me for making her wait for the police! She kept saying the whole hour, "we don't have to wait, we can take care of this." This was after she calmed down that she started saying this. I made her wait and her little 7 year old son (grandson?) kept saying rude things about me making them wait the whole time! So annoying. So, the police found her completely at fault. She didn't even get a scratch on her monstrosity, but I had significant damage down the right side of my car including bends in the door. So, I call my insurance company which is usually very good. However, due to the high volume of claims recently they believe it could take 24 hours to move onto the next step for my claim. They also note that they aren't sure if they can procure me a rental due to most (all?) of the rentals in the area being rented out. That brings me to call my boss. Only problem is that I can't find him at any of his numbers. So, I left a message. Now, I have to worry about his reaction to the possibility that I won't be able to make it to work on Monday or possibly longer. This is tempering my enjoyment of the football (and maybe FM or Civ4) slightly. There is no way I'm going to take a cab for 80 miles each way to work on Monday, so unless my insurance company is able to act quickly, or my boss is able to come up with a viable alternative solution, it looks like there will be an unpleasant conversation coming up sometime in the next 12 hours (assuming he gets my messages.)

Sorry to hear it EF, but I'm glad to hear that nobody was hurt. The stuff you have to worry about is beyond your control, so I'd recommend putting it out of mind as much as possible trying to enjoy your afternoon.
Edit: pizza and beer sound like a good way to get things started! ![]() Last edited by Fonzie : 11-06-2005 at 12:28 PM. |

Ugh, EF, that's horrible. I don't really know what else to say.
When you mention things like the understaffed police force and the insurance problems, it really reminds me about how my hometown still isn't back to normal. I feel really disconnected up here, and I start to hope that maybe things are fine again, but this is the kind of reminder that kicks me back to reality. Good luck with everything.

Thanks. Yeah, the city definitely isn't back to normal yet. Lines at the Supermarket (I still went to get my pizza and stuff) were 3 to 4 times as long as usual. Some things that were never sold out are now sold out. Many stores still aren't open. However, very slowly things are working towards normalcy. Fonzie, you are right. I'm going to try to put it out of my mind. I'm not going to worry about things I can't control right now. It helps that I have 3 different jobs very interested in me (including one that Mrs. Eaglesfan would actually like me to take.) Therefore, ultimately if things don't work out at this job, I have options.. |

My wife got hit by an SUV a few months ago. She called me right after it happened, and I told her not to even talk to the other person until you call the police. The woman actually had the nerve to yell at my wife for wanting to call the police! I know it's become cliche about SUV drivers (just like minivan drivers in the early 90s), but goddamn if I'm not trying to avoid being killed at least 30 times a day by one.

Just got off the phone with my boss. He has been upset with me over several things over the past few weeks (and has generally been stressed out.) However, he was very cool about this. He just said to get it fixed or get a rental car as soon as possible, and he would try to find someone else to supervise the resident's until I can return.

Wow, EF. Talk about a lot of lemons this year for you. I hope you like lemonade....
Glad nobody was hurt and that your boss was cool with things. On that note, enjoy your pizza and beer! They're quite well-deserved. ![]() /tk

I feel pretty much the same way. I will return to New Orleans for the first time in two weeks for Thanksgiving, and I have no idea what to expect. It will definately be strange to stay in my parents new condo (apparently a very nice place right next to the zoo) instead of our house. I also have to convince my mother that she doesn't have to make a large Thanksgiving feast. I doubt they were able to salvage much from the kitchen. |

You're a better person than me if you stayed quiet qhile they blamed you for making them wait. I definitely would have given somebody a rant if they had the nerve to try that on me.

If you have AAA I believe they will reimburse you for the taxi rides to work, if they can't find you a rental car in time. They did something similiar for me once, at least.

Unfortunately, I don't have AAA. I have emergency roadside assistance via a work program, and therefore never felt the need to get AAA. |

AAA is more than just roadside assistance. I think it's the best company in America. And no, I don't work for them.

Is it wrong that I've realized a potential upside to this?
If my insurance company isn't able to come up with a car for me by about 1:00 PM tomorrow, and if WWSM 06 comes out, I'll be able to play it sooner. One small upside, potentially. Oh yeah, I know that AAA offers many services. I ultimately found that many of those services are offered by other places that I don't pay as much for it. However, I'll probably go back to AAA at some point in the future. |

They are definitly interesting and quite tasty. ![]() |

![]() I managed to get drawn into a two front war which I was losing.. Then I think I sobered up and I made peace with Russia, destroyed Ghengis (having Cavalry before them greatly aided that.) Finally, I went back and destroyed Catherine and Russia. I had to save at that point so I could get ready to watch the Eagles game, but I'm looking forward to playing that game more after the Eagles game. I now have a huge land mass and should be able to roll over the competititon..

I can't wait to see how that game plays out. The only other "superpower" left in the game is India, but they are across the ocean and I might just co-exist peacefully with them. I have a few minor civs on my continent but I should be able to wipe them out without too much trouble if I choose to do so. However, I'll probably work on cultivating my newly captured cities first. |

I love how the thread started about a real life car wreck and the possiblity of getting into a fight with one's boss, and quickly became a dynasty thread on the Civ 4 game that you played to distract yourself. If that is not an ad for the game right there, I don't know what is. |

![]() As far as the situation, my insurance company just got back to me. I have an appointment this afternoon to turn in my car and get a rental. So, I'll only miss a day's work which isn't too bad. However, I can't play WWSM 06 (if the download is even out) because today is the wife's one day off work this week. Spending time with her (checks to see if she is looking over shoulder) should be just as good as spending time with FM 06 ![]()

Well, I won the game tonight. I was going for a diplomatic win, and I finally got it in an unconventional manner. The Aztecs weren't voting for me, so I wiped them out. I had the smallish French nation on my side, so I protected them. However, even with their votes I was a bit short. India was the only other player receiving votes, and had a large landmass. So, I finally invaded India, captured about half of the country. That gave me enough votes (combined with France) to win via the UN ![]() |
