High School Field Goal Attempt

Anyone see this? The 10 Spot on SI.com had the clip:

In merging this with the urban legends thread, I first saw this posted on another site claiming it to be a game winning field goal attempt.

It turns out it took place in a 46-14 blow out.

Oh well, still a great piece of video.

I'm sure I posted this before, but we had a guy kick a 67 yard field goal against us in high school on the last play of the game. That made the final score 67-0.

Nice of them to attempt that kick.

My favorite part is the guy in the crowd that sounds like hes getting punched in the gut with every bounce.

Yep, they set it up as well. The ball was on the 45, and the QB dropped back to take a knee at the 50 then call a time out with 2 seconds left.

I take it they didn't win the district's "sportsmanship" award that season.

I just got confirmation that the kicker's name is indeed Ike Settles.

I went to a Catholic school, and we were playing a Baptist school, so they probably did win the award.

I'm gonna rename my next kicker in FOF that I draft Ike Settles so I can remind him that he screwed up in that high school game and I saw the video.

Just make sure you get the timeline correct, because it will be like sooooo unrealistic if it's like 2017 when you draft him and this kid in high school is like a junior or something and he would have graduated college in like 2011 or something.

If I was playing in that game, there's no chance in hell they would've gotten that final play off. At least not until they were backed up to their own 10 after multiple personal foul penalties and my ejection from the game.

It wasn't in Georgia, was it? I saw Kevin Butler do something like that in like 1979.

I recall watching UGA in a bowl game in Kevin Butler's senior year. On the last play of the game they lined him up for a 76-yarder I think - definitely over 70 yards. He missed it wide left.

I remember the play you're talking about. I seem to remember it being about 72 yards. As I remember it, however, the kick ended up about a foot or two short. The game ended in a tie. I'm going to dig up the history on that play just to see which bowl game it was and who they were playing against.

From http://www.uga.edu/gm/302/FeatDoor.html:

Butler's last kick as a Bulldog was a 72-yard attempt that came up a foot short of beating Florida State in the 1984 Citrus Bowl.

Double dola

I was only 8 years old when that play happened, and I've never seen a replay of it. How the hell do I remember it so well?

Butler's longest in high school was 59 yards, a state record at the time. My high school's kicker tied that my senior year. He went on to a much less glorious career with UGA, though he did hit a game winner to beat Ga. Tech in 1995. (Kanon Parkman)

Some kid from Heritage kicked a 63 yarder a couple years later. Dax Langley, maybe?

Nope, it was Texas, in 1987.

Here's a website with a list of all known field goals kicked over 60 yards:

Has Graham Gano graduated high school yet? Four entries on that list?!

I can't imagine being the ass who committed the penalty that wiped out his would-be state record 67 yarder, though.

Ha! Shows what I know.

Come to think of it, I just put 2 + 2 together - he's been handling the kickoffs for the last couple of games. They removed the redshirt. I guess that's the guy whose name I didn't recognize during the broadcasts.

Damn, that's funny. Noop is probably shaking his head in embarrassment right about now.

Yep, it was Dax. That was my high school BTW (although I was long gone when that happened).
