OT: Those speaker protective screen thingees

I've got some decent (though now discontinued) Cerwin Vega floor speakers, one of which has a small hole starting in it's protective screen in one corner. It's not a big deal now, but it looks like it could grow. Anyone know of any preventive measures I can take so it doesn't morph and ruin the entire screen, and sub question even though this is jumping ahead, but anyone know a way to obtain a replacement? Contact C-V directly?

Is it cloth like stuff or an actually a screen? The speaker mesh/cloth stuff is available from several places for speaker DIY'ers. Try some place like THIS to see if it's what you're looking for.

It's an actual screen type thing that pops into the speaker at the four corners.

Hmm... usually it's a frame (either wood or plastic) that has a mesh/fabric wrapped tighly around it. The frame+mesh can attach to the box via magnets, ball & socket, or other methods.

If this is what you have, you can just remove the mesh stuff from the frame (cut it off), buy new fabric mesh, wrap it tightly and secure it to the frame (from the non-visible side) by power stapler, glue or some other method. If you damage the ball/socket attachments you can buy replacement parts from any DIY speaker parts distributor.

However, if it's a metal grill, you might try googling a CV parts or repair.

Yea, it's a plastic frame with black mesh-like wrapping that attaches to the speaker at the four corners, socket-like, just kinda fits into the speaker's ittle circular cut-outs.

Model # = Cerwin Vega R30.

Well two choices - buy a new grill cloth and attach it yourself or call someone like Simply Speakers and have them do it for you. Per their web page "We can re-stretch speaker grills in your choice of four popular colors."

A very smart and nice lady I know once told me that men should not use the word "thingee." I often take her advice and offer it here for everyone's consideration.

One other note - you really don't need the speaker grill on the front. Is more for appearances and offers very little protection. Technically they can even block a small amount of sound (although you'll probably never hear the difference). If you dont 'mind looking at the cones then you can play them just fine w/out the front grill.
