Where's a good place to find a decent yet inexpensive washing machine?

The washer that the little lady and I have is a hand-me-down from her parents that's at least 15 years old and is now barely making it through the cycle. We've decided that we need to get a new one before this one conks out for good.

What we're looking for is something basic and inexpensive, but preferably a name brand. There's a Sears Appliance Outlet nearby and we're hoping we can get a good deal for a washer that's a bit dinged up, but if we don't find anything that fits our needs do any of y'all know of any other stores or websites where we could get a deal? I haven't been able to check Best Buy's website tonight since it's down, but I know they carry them there. I've also check Lowe's and Home Depot's websites, but it seems the cheapest I can find for a name brand is around $270, and I would like to get under $250 if at all possible.

Well, you've already mentioned my number one suggestion -- Sears Outlet quite often rocks on stuff like this. I know several people who've found very good deals there, including one who bought his W&D combo for less than half price. It took him hours to figure out why it was at the outlet, finally found the dent ... on the back side of the washer!

Beyond that, I'd probably just try to catch something at wherever is running a sale when you're ready to buy. Another possibility though is to check the local newspaper, not everything in there is really old second-hand stuff, you might catch a good bargain from a divorce, break-up, move, etc.

You can have ours. It's smaller than HA's nutsack, but it gets the job done. You just have to do 10 loads a day. It's yours for $20.

If the one you have right now is a good name brand, I would at least look into getting it fixed. Unless you want new features, etc.

You'll have to look pretty hard to find one under $250 thats worth a shit.

This is very true. When I was an applicance salesperson, we would lure people in with the substandard $199 machine, so we could step them up to the $270-$400 machine that was better quality. Of course, there are not many, if any, of these type of stores, so you may have spend the the extra $50 for a new one.

Oh yeah, you can always go to one of the used/damaged appliance stores. You can sometimes find a new one with a slight ding in it for 1/3 cheaper. My uncle bought his new $650 washer and dryer a few months ago at one of those places for around $425.

You can have my dryer too. I just bought it 2 months ago and it takes 6 times to dry one load, I changed the vent, and now it seems to pee on the floor. This will be the second time I have GE out to fix this thing.

Try Sam's Club........I think I paid $279 there for my super capacity washer.

Cool, thanks for the advice, guys. First place we'll go will be the Sears outlet for sure, but I'll also check the phone book for places like Airhog mentioned.

I would love to get the washer repaired, but seriously, the thing is at least 15 years old and is starting to rust through. Even if we did get it repaired how long would it be before something else went wrong with it?

Our Sears Outlet is a great place to find cheap appliances, so I whole heartedly endorse starting there.

You may also try an appliance contractor or wholesaler and see if they sell to the public. I went to an appliance contractor that primarily sells to builders when we moved into our house and I got a washing machine for about 20 percent off the Sears sales price and a refrigerator that perfectly fit our odd cutout space that no one else in town carried and was about 30 percent off comparable models at Sears/Best Buy.
