Dodgers hire Grady Little as manager

http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=2250256

The Los Angeles Dodgers have hired former Boston Red Sox manager Grady Little as their manager, the team said Tuesday.

The Dodgers have scheduled an 8 p.m. ET press conference to announce the hiring.

Little has been working as a roving catching instructor in the Chicago Cubs' system.

Little beat out Atlanta Braves special assignment scout Jim Fregosi and former Tampa Bay bench coach John McLaren for the Dodgers job, which became vacant when Jim Tracy left the team by mutual agreement in October.

Little, 55, managed Boston to a 188-136 record in two seasons. He was fired and replaced by Terry Francona after the Red Sox lost to New York in seven games in the 2003 American League Championship Series.

I know he had to take the fall for the Pedro decision, but was he actually a bad manager?

I think the Little hate in Boston got a little out of control. If Pedro could have held on, he'd probably still be the manager there (and if the Sox didn't come back from 3-0 a year later, Francona would probably have been gone by now).

But how many wins would a "great" manager have gotten with those Grady Red Sox Teams (pre-schilling, pre-ortiz breakout). 110? 115?

he was a terrible in-game manager. he was brought in because the clubhouse was such a mess with the whole Jimy Williams/Joe Kerrigan/Dan Duquett situation. He did do a good job with the clubhouse chemistry. However, he couldn't manage a bullpen. His pinch hitting/running and lineup decions had us pulling our hair out. The situation with Pedro in Game 7 just gave the front office an easier way to get rid of him.

The Big Dodger in the Sky would never have let McCourt hire a Giant to begin with.

This is clearly the work of Beelzebub.

Now, quick, fire him and hire an ex-player from the 80s and 90s (Hershiser?). The team is guaranteed to make a World Series in two years (will anyone get what I am aiming at? ).

I've been thinking about this for a few minutes now, and I can't figure it out, so I was hoping you could clarify...

Which one of the bolded portions of your quote refers to Tommy Lasorda?
