That's an okay link, but they get it wrong right off the bat. 480P is NOT the only progressive scan resolution, 720P is also progressive scan (as is the not-yet-widely-used-and-may-never-be-due-to-bandwidth 1080P). Progressive scan just means all the lines of resolution are sent every frame, as opposed to alternating lines of resolution (interlaced). 480i is interlaced with 240 lines sent every frame (each 240 line block is called a "frame"), 480p is progressive scan with all 480 lines sent every block. Progressive scan doesn't have the same flicker potential, and so is generally a much smoother image, better for sports and other high-action viewing. A progressive scan DVD player can output 480p, while a regular DVD player only outputs 480i. Newer DVD players can upsample to output 720p or 1080i, although I haven't seen an example to tell how good they do. And as pointed out elsewhere, ED is 480p, so an ED set can be hooked up to a progressive scan player.

Depending on your regular TV, a progressive scan player may not even work. If you have an older set I'd look for a non-progressive DVD player or at least one that can you can change between 480i and 480p formats. |
