OT: Wall STreet Journal article about virginity
I tried looking for a link, but I don't have an account to view old news.
A coworker of mine showed me an article about a new fad. Women are getting their hymens (um..err...) 'redone'. Many women view it as a gift to their husbands. Prices range from 1800-5000 dollars. Also, there are doctors who also do vaginal-tightening surgery. WTF?!?!? All of this...WTF?!?!? If anybody can find the article, it is worth laughing at.

I couldn't find the original (although it showed up as a WSJ Health page headline on Google, I couldn't even find it in their archives) but there's numerous references to the procedure itself. Among those: http://www.goaskalice.columbia.edu/2272.html
Through a surgical procedure called hymenorraphy, health care providers recreate the hymen by piecing together its remnants. Surgery can also include inserting a gelatin capsule filled with a blood-like substance that will burst during intercourse, simulating bleeding. If there is not enough hymen left, or if the woman was born without one, part of the vaginal wall is used to recreate this thin tissue. The procedure, considered relatively simple, is performed on an outpatient basis. In some countries, women will be seen several weeks after the procedure to follow up on any resulting physical effects and emotional issues. ... Hymenorraphy is generally illegal in countries where cultural traditions place great emphasis on the bride's virginity before marriage. The procedure, however, is still performed illegally, and at a high cost. When it's done illegally, standards of cleanliness, training, and the reputation of the health care provider are additional things to worry about. Some women may also have to worry about securing up to U.S. $2000.00 for the procedure (though it can often cost much less, even as low as U.S. $100.00, in some parts of the world ...)

I laughed pretty hard when I saw this on the front page yesterday. I only read about 4-5 paragraphs, but I did think it was funny when a women who had the procedure done made the comment; "It's for the man who has everything."
So, guys, if your significant other has been hasling you for Christmas gift ideas, there you go. |

I had heard about this being popular in cultures where virginitiy on the wedding day is of utmost importance (India, for example). Of course, us "prudish" Americans don't feel this is a requirement anymore.

I actually heard about this concept back in 1994 or so, but in Japan. At the time I guess it still mattered to a lot of men that they married virgins so this became somewhat popular. I can't imagine American men care enough for this to take off at all.

I'd think you'd figure that out when they went buck wild on your wedding night.
