Noob Questions about Contracts

It is the week before the superbowl in an online multiplayer league. I just took over the team and need to clear cap space for next year. How come I can negotiate contracts with some players, and some I can only view their contract?

It doesn't seem like it matters when the contract ends as I can negotiate with some guys in their last few weeks with me, and some I can't. Is there a personality thing that these players don't want to renegotiate with me or is it something else? Also, who become an unrestricted vs. a restricted free agent?

If you've already negotiated with a player this season - that includes signing as a free agent - you can't renegotiate later in the year. Restricted FAs are up to their 4th year of experience.
