How did the Matt Millen protest work out?

Funny, I think every network had a special pregame segment about what the fans were planning on doing during the game and how the Lions were going to counter the fans protests. Watching this mornings sports show I am get nothing about how the protest went.

So, what happened?

Can we go back to the beginning, when Millen was hired? The Fords weren't the only people talking him up as a potential front office guy, although they were clearly high on him. I didn't understand then, and don't get now, why people saw him as anything more than a Madden-wannabe announcer. The most notable thing he did was wear a helmet cam while pretending to be an umpire or linesman or something when he was still at Fox. His whole tenure has been sad to watch, but comes as no surprise to me. I'd be shocked if he had had any bit of success.

Well if he sent some of those Viking guys over to threaten me, I'd probably hire him too.

From what I can tell he is very personably with the owners (aka kisses their butt, becomes their buddy etc..) which makes them overlook the fact he has no front office skills (or at least hasnt' developed them yet).

Mariucci had a quote out there, I know he is bitter, but it still says a lot.

Para-phrasing it, that basically, most GM's are groomed for their position working as assistant GM's and other positions that have them learning the day to day things that a GM needs to know. Millen has never had that training and without it, will always be what he is now, an ex-football player acting the role of a GM.

I watched the CIN-DET game, and the crowd was still fairly pro Detroit. The announcers mentioned Millen a few times, but basically just to say "he's on the hot seat", and talk about whether he deserves to keep his job. They didn't focus that much on the fans, except towards the end when they showed the Bengal fans that had moved down to celebrate the division title.

The only thing I really noticed was a lot of booing every time a play went against the Lions, but you're going to have that at any bad team's stadium. Most of the fans seemed pro-Detroit, and there were some small pockets of orange but it was hard to say how much of that was actually Bengal fans who made the 4 hour drive and how much of it was protesters.

Were there any big "Fire Millen" banners or signs at the game?

I thought this Fan protest was in part a reaction to security having that fan removed the from the lions game for having a little Fire Millen sign. Watching half a dozen security guards trying to chase down a fan that has a Fire Millen sign written on a little piece of carboard was just stupid.

This is an accurate protrayl of what happened at Ford Field. There was the "Millen Man March" or "Angry Fan March" or whatever you want to call it prior to the game. There were a few hundred fans who marched to Ford Field. They had some amusing t-shirts and signs, but that was about it.

There were some Fire Millen" signs and banners, but overall the crowd was pro-Detroit and pretty subduded. The prior week against Minnesota where the fan got tackled by security was much more of an emotional response. This was too planned.

Also, the game was over by the first quarter. I think most people just sort of lost interest in the whole thing. I watched the game and usually I get upset, but the Lions getting blown out was pretty much a given so when it all unfolded there was no surprise... no anger.

All in all a pretty uneventful day at Ford Field unless your name was Carson Palmer or Rudi Johnson.

), and since he's a Viking, I figured that it'd fit there.
