Mangini to coach J-E-T-S

ESPN just announced it at halftime of the UConn - Syracuse game.

Now I also see it on ESPN.com.

Happy to see the Jets got the man they wanted. The papers have been hot on Mangini for the Jets the past week.

Pretty good choice... It'll be interesting to see how Belicheck deals with ANOTHER coordinator being lost.

Well, I seem to remember the Patriots stealing some defensive coordinator from the Jets, and he did alright.

I'm sure the Jets can say the same thing when the Pats wrestled Belicheck from them . It's just a form of payback.

Hey, BB quit on his own and then came to the Pats for a draft pick. We should get that draft pick back.

You get draft picks for taking HC under contract. Not assistants (maybe something about their contracts are different).

Well, whatever way you want to look at it, he was under contract to the Jets, and they had to work out a deal to get him.

Yeah, I understand it. I also would give up that pick for BB anytime. Hell, I'd give the whole draft for him now.

You know, one thing I wondered... CBS Sportsline said the Jets interviewed Mike Tice (WHY?) and Mangini before picking Mangini. Wonder if they are going to be slammed for not interviewing a minority candidate.

Oh, and also realized Mangini was a Jets coordinator (with the secondary) back when Parcells was coach and Belichick was D-Coord.

They interviewed a ton of people that CBS isn't reporting, including NYG D-Coord Tim Lewis who is a minority.

I think that pick was Chad Pennington. You can have him.

Personally, I'm not impressed with this hire. The guy was coordinator for one season. Half of that season the D stopped the run like they were playing with 9 men on the field. Then Bruschi came back and they play better. Oh, and the secondary couldn't stay healthy or cover the diet pepsi machine.

I am wondering how deep the BB coaching tree is stacked with talent. Just two years ago Buddy Ryan's kid was seen as a rising star under BB, then he tried to make Warren Sapp a free safety and run a 34 defense without a single linebacker on the roster. (Sarcasm included for your pleasure.)

What's not to get from Mangini's point of view? You get offered an NFL head coaching job, you take it. Period.

He was going to get one offered sooner or later and he could probably use another couple years of experience. While it may just be a smear campaign, Patriots "sources" are saying he's an x's and o's guy but he doesn't really have a sack and does not address the team very well when it comes to something other than writing on a whiteboard.

I mean I like the guy, he's the reason I wasn't concerned about Crennel, I'm just not sure if he's going to succeed right now.

In the end obviously it's his choice, I'm just debating .

They did work out a deal, but there is much debate as to what sort of a contract he really had with them. He had a contract to take over when Parcells left, but Parcells wasn't actually "leaving", he was just moving up the food chain with the Jets.

Besides, the Jets had already stolen Parcells from the Patriots in the first place (talking to him during Super Bowl week no less!), so Mangini is actually #3 in the chain...

to think that Mangini is only 35, wow, that's my age damnit!

Now they can stop saying Gruden is the youngest coach in the NFL

Tice is from Long Island, I think. That's why they interviewed him.

Took the Pats about an hour to name Dean Pees, current linebacker coach, as Mangini's replacement and frankly, after reading a bit about him, I don't feel too bad about it now.

Best of luck to Mangini though, well except against us.

Just after Mangini left I read that Saban had tried to hire Pees as a defensive coordinator for the Dolphins last year, so I figured this would be the move.

yeah, that'w one of the things I read too and also that he's very respected and very vocal in meetings and in the locker room... The guy is also 56 years old, which helps with the respect side of things...

I like the hire. I would have preferred Sherman but it looks like he's being blackballed for some reason in the NFL. No chatter about him at all.

I am not convinced of Sherman being blackballed. I am surprised that he has not gotten a better shot at one of the jobs that have been opened this year.
