Am I the Only One Who Hates Some Of These Movie Trailers?

I am annoyed by movie trailers a lot, but some just push the envelope more than others. Two of them are on frequently at the moment: Annapolis and When A Stranger Calls.

The first one starts out with me wondering what the big fricking deal is about Annapolis anyway. I'm not saying it's not, but my guess is it is not common knowledge. Usually when people think of military academies, they think of West Point first anyway. So right there, you have a military movie that apparently doesn;t involve war or action, but hazing in school? And then you replace Gossett Jr. and Gere with Tyrese Gibson and James Franco? Yeah, that's compelling. Oh yeah, and toss on annoying music/sound effects and some of the most boring clicheed lines I have heard, ouch.

And the second one sounds like a combination of "Hostage" and the opening scene of Scream and every crappy slasher flick from the last 20 years. Every time they get to the part where the girl picks up the phone and screams "Stop calling me!", and the cop at the other end says "Get out! We traced the call and it's coming from inside the house!", I want to scream along with the girl, it's so freakin' stupid.

Oh yeah, and the best part is they play each of these trailers every other commercial break on every channel I happen to be on.

These could be Oscar winners for all I know, but I will never see them because an awful marketing approach and/or trailer makes me completely negative about them.

When A Stranger Calls is a remake of one of the greates thrillers of the past 30 years (with the amazing Carol Kane), so that's probably why there are so many "cliche's" - The original came up with a lot of the cliche's. As far as Annapolis goes, I think it looks decent. Rental decent, not $8 movie ticket decent.

Isn't When A Stranger Calls a remake of the Carol Kane horror film?

D'oh someone beat me to it.

Hmmm...never heard of it. Was it the one of the original slasher flicks then (the first one, I mean)? Did they have the whole call and he's in the house deal?

Hmm, well I retract that objection at least, although now I have fodder for Hollywood's continuing inability to come up with something new and original.

And the marketing is still ridiculous when I see the commercial ten times in a night.

But at least now there's a chance I'll see it.

I agree, West Point is the only military academy that matters.

I think, in general, after so long it will be damn near impossible to come up with something "fresh" or original for a movie, simply because as time goes on, there continues to be the possibility that its been done before. Maybe we're just on the cusp of this moment in time, or maybe there really isn't any originality left in most of hollywood.

Why haven't you checked on the children?

(and USAFA dominates over all others. Off we go into the wild blue yonder, flying high, into the sky...)

If I recall correctly, there is a ship blowing up at the end of the Navy trailer? WTF?
