Any Gothic II Gold Players?

I played Gothic II until completion and enjoyed the game very much. I understand that Gothic II Gold contains the expansion pack that is somewhat intermingled with the game. Would you recommend playing the expansion if you played the original Gothic II game?

An emphatic yes. There is a great deal of new material that makes it almost feel like a whole new game. Also, you can always try a new class. Be warned, the expansion makes the game harder.

If I remember correctly, it's been a little while, I played as a fighter. What class are you playing? Also, I appreciate the constrictive feedback.

I played as a fire mage the first time through, and while the game was difficult early, it became very easy late in the game. However, this is due in part to my making sure that I killed everything and leveled up as much as possible.

This time through I'm playing as a fighter, and the fights are harder, the strength requirement to use weapons is much higher, and the mobs have more HP's. It is a much more difficult experience, but still a very enjoyable game.

Also, there are new classes in this expansion pack that I want to try out. I'll probably play through the game a 2nd time with the expansion (3rd time overall) to try out at least one of the new classes (probably a water mage.)

fyi, the Water Mage isn't an actual class, it's a sub-class..so you can play it with any of the other ones.

It's very much worth playing through again though, there's a ton of new stuff at the beginning. Now once you get past the 2nd chapter or so there's really nothing(if anything) new, but the 1st/2nd chapter was the meat of the game anyhow.

Ahh, I thought it might be a subclass that was compatible with all classes, but I'm savoring this time through and wasn't far enough into the game to definitively realize that. Thanks

You all convinced me to stop at Gamestop on the way home. Unfortunately, they did not have any copies. I know Comp USA has copies so I'll get one tomorrow.

I had played 3 games of Gothic II last year, one as a Paladin and two as a Mage (each about 40-60 hours worth). When I got the expansion pack, I wanted to concentrate on the new things, particularly the new land. I saw right away how the Night of the Raven changed the Gothic II game in that it added new characters (actually, pretty much all of the old characters from Gothic I) and it added many new conversation branches. After doing the regular Chapter 1 and early Chapter 2 stuff (about 15 hours worth) plus most of the new quests, I entered the new land. I can enthusiastically that the new land (Land of Adanos) is my most favorite of all of the lands in the Gothic series. While still in Chapter 2, I did complete everything in the new land which took about 25 hours by itself! That was where I stopped, knowing that there would be another 25-35 hours to finish the game. I do not know what much of the rest of the chapters change because of the expansion.

EF is quite right in talking about how much the expansion made the game. Word among the fanboys was the Gothic II was too easy, so PB made quite a number of significant changes to make the expansion much harder. Simply put, they made a number of creatures noticeably harder (and a few easier), they increased the rate at which you can use your skill points (it escalates as you get stronger) and as a Magician, they pretty much doubled the mana cost of each throw. I, as usual, did play it is a Mage and found it nearly impossible. The reason is that using a Circle 2 rune (Ice Lance is the best one), not only do you have limited number of throws but it costs more to get more mana. I played quite a bit of the game by letting others fight for me and by using summoning spells. This ended being a welcomed change from the normal way of playing and certainly more challenging for I really had to pick my fights, given my limited capacity to do damage. Playing as a Fighter (particularly good at One-Handed) is probably not as impossible as a Mage but one has to be really good to go to the new land. All in all, you have to work at being stronger just to be able to do the same thing as you did before - and the game makes it harder to become stronger.

As far as the classes, you work in Chapter 1 and 2 at joining the Ring of Water but you still have to be a Milita, Magician or Mercenary to do so. From what I can tell, you can't join the Water Mage and once you get done with the new land, you probably don't have to deal with them anymore.

EF: You really have to find Gothic I. You get a little teaser in the expansion when you first meet up with the Water Mages and see a pivotal cut scene from Gothic I.

Bucc,

I'm still working on finding Gothic 1. No luck yet.

I bought the game and tried to install. The first 3 CDs installed perfectly, but it never asked me to install the 4th CD. Has anyone else had this problem? Can anyone help me proceed.

The 4th CD is the expansion. Put it in, and it will install. The Gold edition doesn't install the expansion by default, in case you just want to play the original easier game.

Just picked this up. Still getting used to it, after starting a game I remember why I got tired of the first one as I can't stand the controls.

Need to have time to really sit down and play as it looks like a major time sucker.

Anyone have abny problems with it? A couple of times I had to restart my system because I tried to startthe game and nothing would happen and my system would eventually start to crawl like it got stuck on something when trying to start.

In the 2nd game you can go into the options and set the controls to be a more normal everyday style. The inventory/shop screen is still horrific, but it helps with the rest.

Not sure about the weird issues, I never had any problems with it.

I had to update the options quite a bit to mimic most games of today. I now remember that I hated the fact that the mouse simply moves your view instead of having a cursor like today's games. Also, not being able to see any stats of the monster also hurts (however, all things that I should have remembered). I must have gotten used to all of that because I played the original Gothic II to completion.

There are some similiarities, however, I believe Gothic2 is much more challenging. The mobs aren't scaled to players' abilities, and until you learn what to avoid, there are plenty of mobs that will kill you quickly out in the world. Gothic2 also uses a more "classical" RPG leveling system. They both have open worlds with some excellent dialogue and very good voice acting. I think the dialogue is probably more interesting in Gothic2, but it is more campy. I enjoy both games immensely.

I don't believe there are many mods for it.. I've seen a German mod or two for it on the web I believe, but that is about it.

Gothic 2 changed the way I thought about RPG's specifically and video games in general. Just an outstanding piece of work.

At Best Buy last night I had an itch to buy something. I decided to get a couple of things actually. This game was one of them. I'm looking to fire it up tonight and give it a look see. If Bucc and Eagles like it, I imagine I probably will as well. Wish me luck. . .
