What do I do???

I have an item on my credit report - it says 81 dollars in collections, has some code, then Sprint Ltd. I have never had a sprint account, to my memory. So I disputed it with the credit agency - zing, comes back a validation in like 5 minutes. The contact info the credit agency gave me is not valid. I call Sprint, and they have no record of me ever having an account with them, anywhere. So, even if I wanted to pay this charge, I have nobody to pay. I called the credit agency and they were unbelievably unhelpful. What do I do?

Is it on the reports from all 3 bureaus, or just one of them?

Ultimately, if they fail to correct this after disputing in writing (snail mail), you must sue them.

Under the Fair Credit Reporting Act, they do not have the right to cause you harm due to an improper listing. You will win.

Due to the Fair Credit Reporting Act, you should do better than 81 dollars if they don't back down and correct it. At any rate, I'd see what an attorney thinks. A nice affidavit that you've never had the contact provided by that bureau, along with a threat of a lawsuit unless they remove the bad listing should suffice.

Ultimately, if you're not willing to defend your good name, who is going to?

If you filed a dispute with the credit agency in question I think the next step is filing a complain with the FTC. Now, if you've done that hmm.. call 'The Clark Howard' show?

I had an item that was wrong on my credit report once. A single letter advising them the listing was fraudulent and must be removed within 30 days else they would be sued, along with a reference to the FCRA, got it all straightened out. If I had been denied financing for a house/car/etc due to it, I would've gone straight to a lawsuit.

Better yet: Go to the Colbert Report. You know he's about the truth.

I was leaning towards calling up one of my friends who went to law school. It seems like you folks are in agreement. It just boggles my mind that the contact information they have is wrong, yet they were able to verify the data as 'correct.'

They just need to be reminded that they do not have the legal right to fuck you like this. It's your job to make sure they learn this and never forget it.

First of all, did you report to all 3 major reporting agencies (Equifax, Experion and TransUnion). If you did and no action was taken on in the next 30 days, you are protected by the Federal Fair Credit Reporting Act. This means that if they don't take action in 30 days, the claim is dropped from your records. But you must file a claim to the reporting agencies above. I had to look up the time limit, because I kept thinking it was 90 days. You can ask you lawyer friends for verification, but that is the step you can take.

Thanks wade, I should have pointed out what you do in regards to disputes. Take a look at this link and read up on the section concerning the Fact Act.
