Pro Bowl: Does anyone care?

McNair replaces Plummer for the Pro Bowl because Plummer is injured. LOL. Somehow there's some irony in there. Also, Plummer replaced someone (can't remember who) because of an injury. I think at this point, nobody cares anymore.

Not to threadjack my own thread in the first post (is that possible?), but when people say so-and-so was selected for the pro bowl X amount of times, does that count every time they were selected for the first team, or when they replaced someone, or both?

And only then if the losers had to pay it.

I heard back in the day, the college national champs played the NFL all-pro team. That would be cool.

I thought it was the other way around, an all-American college team played the pro champs.

Either way, I can't imagine that anyone really cares anymore. Why should fans care when the players don't even care. All they like is the free trip.

You might be right, I remember it was something that stirred the imagination of possibilities when I heard about it. I could enjoy a game like that.

But the Pro Bowl. It is one step above those Quarterback Challenges they have on during the off-season where the players spend most of the time mugging in front of the camera.

The last year I watched a complete game was Marshall Faulks rookie year. I think he got MVP.

There are only 5 PB events I remember...

John Jefferson's cath to win the game for the NFC. Lofton, Jefferson and Kaufmann all represented the packers that year (82?)

The above mentioned game. 94?

The game where Thigpen had that 1 handed catch in the middle for a TD...bout 79 yards or something.

There was a game that went back and forth until the end. both teams in the 40s or something.

It was the all star team of college seniors who played the NFL champions. I think it was a pre-season game.

I used to watch when I was younger, but now it just seems meaningless.

What I'd like to know is when a guy makes the Pro Bowl because player X and player Y are out (replacement of the replacement), does it "count" on his resumé ??

Like when the player is retired, it says "Selected to 5 Pro Bowls during 14 year career" (for example). Does that count the times when the player made the Pro Bowl because everyone ahead of him was out or does that only take into accournt the real selections ??

For instance, Steve Young made 7 straight Pro bowls but each time, it was as a "real" selectee from the original NFC roster list.
This year, I read because of Plummer's injury, McNair will make his 3rd Pro Bowl appearance but this is also the 2nd time he is "chosen" because someone else cannot make it....(which would mean he has actually been chosen for good, only once)

Why not play the game the week before the Super Bowl at the same venue? That would give something to fill the void of the week off and a good lead-in for media day. The only drawback is that the players in the Super Bowl wouldn't participate.

Hmm, I find the silly skills challenge type stuff far more interesting to watch. I vote for the Pro Bowl being one step below.

It was the College All-Stars vs. the NFL Champion. It was usually played just prior to the official start of preseason. The last one was played in 1974 or 1975. I recall it was always competitive as the pro teams didn't want to get beat by a bunch of kids.

I actually think if they replaced the Pro Bowl with this kind of exhibition, they'd do a lot better. I know I'd probably watch.

We've had this discussion (Pro Bowl / FOF) for ages.
To me, it's certainly not about the game itself (indeed: no one cares and the result is absolutely irrelevant) but it's about the Pro Bowl selections. The fact that this or that player has been "elected to"...on his resume.

You have 32 teams and only 2 All-League Quarterbacks, Running backs, Full backs etc...The "crème de la crème" obviously.
but what about this guy who routinely finishes in the Top5 QBs in the league...but because he never is Top2, he has no award on his resumé.

If there was Pro Bowl list in FOF, he'd probably still be a ProBowl QB year in and year out...and that'd show his worth -long after his retirement- with legitimate credentials.

just my two cents...

...but like I explained in the post above, it "helps" give the other "very good" players of the league (and their owners) something to cheer about and more important, something to remember 20-30 seasons down the road when you look back at past seasons..

"ah yeah, that's right, he had a great year in 2018 because he was chosen for the Pro Bowl. Still, he barely missed the All-League honors...not bad though!"

That's the kind of comment one who could make if ever that was a Pro Bowl roster in FOF.
