Do you adjust player's numbers in FOF?
It annoys me to see receivers with numbers outside of the 80s, and all linebackers should have numbers in the 50s. So I usually "fix" the player numbers to conform to the "rules". Do you change the numbers, or just go with whatever the game assigns?

I change the numbers, but not for the reasons you mention. Call me weird, but I have certain numbers that I like, and numbers that "fit" certain types of players in my mind. It's part of the immersion factor for me.

I do that too. If I particularly like a linebacker, he becomes number 54. It's the Zach Thomas award.

Yes, perhaps because I'm insane (or have OCD):
Starting QB gets #1 Backup QB gets #2 3rd QB gets #3 Starting RB gets #20 Backup RB gets #21 3rd RB gets #22 Starting FB gets #23 Backup FB gets #24 Starting TE gets #87 Backup TE gets #88 3rd TE gets #89 Starting FL gets #80 Backup FL gets #82 If I have a 3rd FL, he gets #84 Starting SE gets #81 Backup SE gets #83 O-Line all get numbers in the 60s, but no position gets a particular number Punter gets #4 Kicker gets #5 D-Line all get numbers in the 90s, but no position gets a particular number LBs all get numbers in the 50s, but no position gets a particular number Secondary all get numbers in the 20s and 30s, but no position gets a particular number If there's any rational explanation for this, it's that it makes glancing through the box scores a bit easier, especially when you're blasting through seasons in SP. But it's probably just because I'm a crazy completist. ![]() |

QBs, Flankers, Kickers: under twenty. Cornerbacks, speedier tailbacks: 20's Free safeties, power backs: 30's Fullbacks, strong safeties: 40's Middle linebackers, centers: 50's Guards, defensive tackles: 60's Tackles, defensive ends: 70's Split Ends, some flankers: low 80's Tight Ends: high 80's Outside linebackers, and the occasional d-lineman: 90's. It really does help. I do it when they first come to the team through the draft or free agency. (Because I imagine if I was a player, I'd hate to have my number changed every season. I'd get disgruntled! My loyalty would wane!) Sometimes I give a guy who's only on the team to return kicks a number under 10 just as a reminder not to cut him when I'm scrolling through the purple dots at the bottom of my roster screen. Some of the best kick (and cheapest) returners pretty much can't do anything else real well. And I usually rename each member of each season's rookie class. Nothing fancy or silly, but the act of renaming them gives you more of a mnemonic. And the immersion. I like that word, WSU.

I usually give the TE's numbers in the 10s or 90s so its easier to look at them in the Box score. And I give the FB numbers in the 50s. A lot of times I'll sim pretty quickly, so maybe I dont always know exactly what my backup TE's name is, for instance.

Yeah, i'll go through and ad a -KR to the end of the name of some shitty WR guy that does nothing good but return kicks. That way I won't just glance over and ignore the fact that I have no KR or PR for the upcoming season. |

I keep a list of numbers I've retired and make sure no new players are using them each season. If I'm playing as the 49ers, I can't have somone using 16 or 80, it just doesn't feel right.
I also can't have FBs or LBs with effeminate names. If the name is Leslie, I change it to Lee or something. WRs and CBs can have effeminate names though, it just seems to be OK. Last edited by wishbone : 02-08-2006 at 10:15 AM. |

Renaming guys when you release them is kind of interesting, too. Helps you remember them better. I'll give them a name that's sort of memorable, but not absurd, like a city name or an animal or something. Like Joe Bear or Wally Bird or something.
Can't tell you how many times that my former kick holder has come back to beat me seasons later as a starting quarterback/obligatory QB as game MVP by default.

I always do this when I play as the Steelers (which is usually the case, since there is no more expansion). I never let anyone wear 12 (Bradshaw), 32 (Franco), 58 (Lambert), or 75 (Mean Joe Greene).
All good linebackers and defensive linemen wear numbers in the 90s. Safeties and fullbacks wear numbers in the 40s. Interior linemen wear 60s. Tackles wear 70s. Cornerbacks and running backs wear 20s and 30s. Posting this, right after reading about the guy that might have cured AIDS, makes me think I could be using my time a little more usefully. |

I used to do it, especially when I played with the 49ers (no #8, no #16...). I've always thought I was, like, a freak to do that... It seems I'm not the only...
![]() And it seems I'm not the only to see "retired numbers" as a possible nice addition to future FOF versions. I'm not an expert, but I don't think it would be hard to add something like that. TPB has it, and it's very cool IMO. |

yep, I change players' numbers.
Especially to make sure no one on the team wear our "retired jerseys"... (I got #5, #8 and #80 retired on my current career)

Nah, only players that played during my years and I had Steve Young and Jerry Rice on the 49ers team for the first few years of my main career (FOF2) Also, you don't want to run out of numbers and I'd much rather retire Brock Sheriff's #5 jersey's than Montana's #16 ![]()
