'Rock Star' auditions announced

By JAM! TV

Although the producers haven't announced which band, if any, will be featured on the series, the "Rock Star" producers are looking for singers who want to live the rock n' roll lifestyle.

CBS has announced a casting call for the second season of "Rock Star" this summer. Casting will being in March and applications for potential singers can be found at www.cbs.com />CBS.com and http://rockstar.msn.com.

Open auditions will take place in the following cities on the following dates, with Toronto and Vancouver being the only Canadian stops for the producers.

March 1, 2006 - Austin, Texas

March 3, 2006 - Boston

March 6, 2006 - Atlanta

March 8, 2006 - New York

March 11, 2006 - Chicago

March 13, 2006 - Toronto

March 16, 2006 - Minneapolis, MN

March 18, 2006 - Seattle, WA.

March 21, 2006 - San Francisco.

March 23, 2006 - Vancouver.

March 31, 2006 - Los Angeles

CBS has not revealed whether a notable rock band, like INXS last year, will headline the series or if the format will become similar to "American Idol." It was rumoured that rockers Van Halen would be the focus of the new installment. The band's management has denied all such gossip.

Despite a disappointing debut, "Rock Star INXS" gained a devoted following and ratings grew throughout the summer of 2005 culminating with a season high 7.83 million viewers for the finale in the U.S.

sweet news, I really liked Rock Star: INXS. I also liked the fact that it was a Summer show. Even though Summer isn't a big TV watching period, it's kinda nice to have one series to follow, even though I'll probably record it and watch it later most of the time...

That South Park link was pretty funny too

oh, and speaking of INXS, they were part of Super Bowl pregame show somewhere in Canada. They showed them with JD Fortune one a couple of occasions on Global, the network that carried the feed for the Super Bowl (pregame and game) around here...

I only saw them briefly but I did record the whole pregame show. I only have to weed through it to watch it

I'm looking forward to this. I became an addict of the INXS show. Fox8 did a nine hour "summary" show after the series had finished including all the performances. I made a dvd from it including only those performances I really enjoyed - there are 51 songs on it. Suzie's "Bohemian Rhapsody" has become my ten year old daughter's favourite. She says she's going to do that at the next local talent show. I can't wait to see that

TMZ.com is reporting that VAN HALEN are in the market for a new lead singer, and the marketplace will be the upcoming reality show "Rock Star: The Series".

Last October, VAN HALEN reps vehemently denied the band would use "Rock Star" in a talent search for a new lead singer. The reps are now singing a different tune. VAN HALEN publicist Larry Solters told TMZ.com: "I'm not denying it. I'm not going to answer any questions about it."

Last year, the band INXS used "Rock Star" to find a new lead singer. J.D. Fortune won the competition, and the band is now making a comeback with a hit new album and a sold-out tour.

As for VAN HALEN, the group has had three lead singers since it hit the scene back in 1978: David Lee Roth, who left the band in 1985, Sammy Hagar, who split in 1995, and Gary Cherone, who did just one album and tour with the band in 1998.

The next season of "Rock Star", produced by Mark Burnett for CBS, is scheduled to air during the summer. Neither Burnett nor CBS would comment on the VAN HALEN buzz.

I have suffered through so many indignities as a VH fan. enduring all of the ridiculous mudslinging when Roth left, hearing all the "Van Hagar" jokes, having the brothers pompously boot Sammy Hagar, the Roth reunion that never happened, VHIII, seeing Roth turn into a lousy caricature of himself and seeing Eddie become an idiotic drunk, and the miserable BoBW greatest hits that featured some crappy new material and engineering gaffes on some old material, not to mention a terribly disfunctional and overpriced tour. and then, somehow, "Jump" appears with all the disco music at the Opening Ceremonies in Turino, and I'm about at my boiling point.

Van Halen on Rockstar would push me over the edge

Awesome! There would be nothing better than a pissed off Eddie lashing out at some 22 year old wannabe from Arkansas. And then having Sammy show up unannounced at one of the tapings. Good times guaranteed for all.

I hope DLR still has his radio show by the time this airs, because Eddie might completely flip if he has to listen to DLR's comments about the show. One can only hope.

TOMMY LEE Is The Next 'Rock Star' - Mar. 10, 2006

According to MelodicRock.com, MÖTLEY CRÜE drummer Tommy Lee has been in negotiations with the producers of the "Rock Star" show for the last few weeks to take on a star role in the revamped show format. The house band will be retained, with Tommy Lee taking the place of INXS searching for his next "Rock Star" lead vocalist. The winner will front Lee's next studio album and a tour (timing to be determined).

Rumors over who would front the show following INXS' 2005 role have been widespread since the first season finale. After a suitable band could not be found, it was originally decided to gather a group of name musicians and search for a singer for a brand new band — until Lee stepped in, that is. An official announcement is expected within a day or two, but Lee gave this hint away as recently as this week in an interview with the Richmond Times-Dispatch:

Q: Any chance of another season of "Tommy Lee Goes to College" or are your academic days over?

Tommy Lee: "In about two days you're gonna hear a statement about something new. I'm looking at the press release right now, but I can't tell you what it is."

Q: Is it an NBC press release?

Tommy Lee: "No, a different network."

Q: But we'll be seeing you back on TV?

Tommy Lee: "Absolutely."

I heard an announcement was coming within the next week or so. This is blech, frankly. But much like AI, I'm more interested in the show than the result, so I'll be anxiously awaiting this over the summer.

This actually makes a lot of sense and is probably better than dragging some other band that has been washed up for 10 years. I thought after the first Rockstar there was a good chance Tommy Lee would grab one of the singers for a band. Can't wait.

people on the radio around here talked about the possibility or getting a superband together, get a singer via Rockstar, record one CD, tour a little then everybody goes their merry way. Tommy Lee, Dave Navarro, who else could jump in?

Kip Winger on bass! Desmond Child and Aldo Nova as the songwriting duo!! The possibilities are endless for an overrated, wife-beating, huge shlonged, washed-up drummer from an 80s hair metal band!!!

I'm not much of a fan of the guy. But the show should still be good.

Doh, Navarro was on the first Rockstar...always get him and Tommy Lee confused for some reason. But yeah, put those two together and let them find a lead singer.

a coworker just forwarded me this:
Quote:
According to Variety.com, MÖTLEY CRÜE drummer Tommy Lee, along with bassist Jason Newsted (VOIVOD, ex-METALLICA) and Gilby Clarke (ex-GUNS N' ROSES), are forming a new band called SUPERNOVA and will use the "Rock Star" TV program to search for a lead singer. In addition, "Rock Star" has signed songwriter-performer Butch Walker to produce SUPERNOVA's first album, to be released just before the new band hits the road in 2007. Walker, named Rolling Stone's 2005 "hot" producer, has written or produced tracks for AVRIL LAVIGNE, PINK, BOWLING FOR SOUP and TOMMY LEE.

Dave Navarro and Brooke Burke will return as hosts. Each weekly episode, which will air on CBS-TV, will also now feature guest appearances by celebs or rockers.

"Friends of mine, like Slash, Macy Gray, Moby and Rob Zombie, will join us and throw in their two cents about who should stay and who should go," Navarro said.

Lee released his third solo album two years ago and starred in NBC's "Tommy Lee Goes to College" last year.

Newsted left METALLICA in 2003, forming the band ECHOBRAIN and performing for technothrash band VOIVOD. Clarke has worked with various artists since GN'R split, including Michael Jackson and Lenny Kravitz.

Burnett, David Goffin, Lisa Hennessy, Navarro, Lee and Carl Stubner will exec produce the second season of "Rock Star". Conrad Riggs and Eden Gaha are co-exec producers.

Tommy Lee, Jason Newsted Turn To 'Rock Star' For Supergroup Singer

03.16.2006 10:40 AM EST

Former Guns N' Roses guitarist Gilby Clarke is also on board for newly formed Supernova.

Over the last few weeks, hundreds of undiscovered singers have been blindly auditioning for the second season of CBS' "Rock Star," not knowing which band they'd be asked to front should they follow in J.D. Fortune's footsteps and walk away from the

reality television experiment victorious.

The producers behind "Rock Star" have now revealed that they've recruited three big names to form a rock supergroup, musicians who will leave it up to America to find the band's voice.

Mötley Crüe kitman Tommy Lee, former Metallica bassist and current Voivod member Jason Newsted, and onetime Guns N' Roses axeman Gilby Clarke will be banding together as Supernova, utilizing the Mark Burnett-produced "Rock Star" to secure a lead singer.

The show's first season featured the surviving members of INXS. Fortune was picked to replace the late Michael Hutchence, and the revived outfit released Switch in November (see
"INXS Insist Finding J.D. Was An 'Organic' Process, Think 'Angels Got Together' "). To date, the album has sold close to 308,000 copies.

Burnett's team has enlisted songwriter Butch Walker to produce the inaugural Supernova offering, which will be released in 2007, in conjunction with a full U.S. tour. Walker has produced and written tunes for the likes of Avril Lavigne, Pink, Bowling for Soup, Sevendust and Lindsay Lohan. He also worked with Lee on his 2005 solo release, Tommyland: The Ride.

Dave Navarro and Brooke Burke are set to return as the show's hosts. Each week, "Rock Star" will feature guest appearances by notable musicians and other celebrities. "Friends of mine, like Slash, Macy Gray, Moby and Rob Zombie, will join us and throw in their two cents about who should stay and who should go," Navarro told Variety.

Lee remains an active Crüe member, and Newsted — who left Metallica five years ago — is preparing for the spring launch of Katorz, the first Voivod album in the band's 20-plus-year career recorded without founding guitarist Denis "Piggy" D'Amour, who succumbed to colon cancer back in late August (see
"Voivod Guitarist Denis 'Piggy' D'Amour Dies Of Cancer At 45 "). Clarke's résumé includes his three-year tenure as the rhythm guitarist for GN'R, and a brief stint with L.A. Guns. He also played with the reformed MC5 on their 2005 European tour.

Alice in Chains drummer Sean Kinney told MTV News last month that the band had been approached by the producers of "Rock Star" for the second season, but that they turned the offer down (see
"Remaining Alice In Chains Members Reuniting For Summer Gigs "). The surviving members of that group — Kinney, bassist Mike Inez, and guitarist Jerry Cantrell — have reunited, and are planning a brief run of U.S. clubs this May. Alice in Chains are in the process of auditioning singers who'll be asked to step into the late Layne Staley's shoes for the group's imminent touring and recording plans.

With Supernova in place for the talent contest, the "Rock Star" camp could end up running into some legal trouble down the line over the supergroup's name. Back in the early 1990s, a poppy punk trio called Supernova emerged from California's Orange County. The band, which released its first album on Atlantic Records in 1995, is perhaps best known for the track "Chewbacca," which appeared on the soundtrack to Kevin Smith's "Clerks."

— Chris Harris

Slash in the mix, interesting...

It would be awesome if Axl Rose entered and won.

(In all seriousness, am I a loser if I think Tommy Lee's solo stuff is pretty good and his Methods of Mayhems stuff is freaking sweet?)

This could end up producing a more interesting end result, actually.

I hope Tommy Lee doesn't get too starved for attention during the show, though. I could see that getting annoying.

Methods of Mayhem was one band that kind of fell off my radar. I did hear one or two songs from them (or a few "various artists" CDs) and I think I liked their stuff...

I also really liked the show Tommy Lee Goes To College.

Some additional info:

"There will be a few minor tweaks to the format this season, including expanding the number of contestants from 15 to 16, and--as Burnett told Toronto's London Free Press Monday--inviting back some of the first season finalists to compete a second time around (word has it, Toronto native and fourth-place finisher, Suzie McNeil, has already been asked to return)."

I've just seen an advert on Fox tv that they're airing the first show at 6 pm tomorrow night - that's July 5th. It seems to be the show with the contestants settling into the rock mansion. I can't believe that they'll show it here before the states so that would suggest you'll get it today (July 4th) sometime. Check your tv schedules.

I've just been running through the schedule for the next week and there's a lot coming up.

Tomorrow's show is just a half hour - see the contestants and mansion. On Thursday - the 6th - there's a one and a half hour show with the first music. My guess is that's a repeat of the first half hour show and the first one hour music show.

On Sunday they have THREE shows totalling two and a three quarter hours including the first elimination. Again, reading between the lines, that will be a repeat of the first half hour, the second hour of the second show and a three quarter hour elimination.

If nothing else the time given over to the show indicates how successful the last series was.

Just in time to fill the gap between the World Cup and the start of the new Premiership season

And just a comment to those who might read this and didn't see last year's series: this is not American Idol. Last year's INXS show was the best music show I've seen on tv in years. It turned me into a teenager again

If you're into rock then give it a try. I doubt you'll be disappointed.

Here's what I wonder...what are they singing in the elimination section? Last year it was INXS songs, but this year they don't have band created music to perform. That's the part I'm going to miss from last year, because INXS has some great songs. My guess is they'll hold some old rock favorites for the elimination.

And who wants to make a pool on what episode someone is going to pull out "Bohemian Rhapsody?" I think it'll show up the second the singers have a choice.

They should have them sing songs from the band members previous bands. So make it either Metallica, Motley Crue, or Guns N Roses.

It's on FOX this year??

I'm doubting that Metallica would give authorization for that...

That's not really a problem. Metallica's music is really not the best for this type of competition anyway. Little too much yelling.

No comments yet?

Zayra was definitely the worst as far as I'm concerned. She butched Evanescence's song. Chris was pretty bad too and considering he's the only one that got ripped by the band, he probably goes away tomorrow.

I was probably most impressed with Toby's performance, good strong clean vocals. Intrigued by Dilana as well, I want to see more of her. Dana might have the best voice of the group, but she might be more appropriate for American Idol. She could blow McPhee away as far as I'm concerned.

some early favorites to be sent home early for me:
Magni, the Ed Kowalczyk clone from Iceland, they already kind ripped him
Phil, the tall guy who had no presence on stage
Chris, the dude who absolutely butchered Roxanne, that was a painful one
the lady (forgetting her name at the moment) who just couldn't sing the Nickelback song, hearing her try to get a bit louder in the middle of the song was also very painful

I dind't like Lukas so much, the guy was just yelling at times and talking in the mike at other times. Yes, he is a performer, gotta give him that.

Zayra, well, I didn't think she was the worst, but she definitely wasn't in the best.

I liked a couple who went acoustic, like the surfer dude and the guy who did the Black Crowes song. Felt that both had great voices, now they'll need to show they can rock too. The Black Crowes guy also looked a bit too Imerican Idolish, rest to see if he can rock too, as I said.

Another who looked a bit too American Idolish is the pretty young thing from Georgia. Great voice, but just too clean to be with these guys. She reminded me of Jessica from the first season.

There were a few hot ones among the females, didn't you think?

Dilana who did Lithium wasn't one of the hot one though, more like the freak of nature, but she was able to rock with her crazy jumping routine. That could get old quick though, at least to me...

I forget a few that didn't jump out at me and I didn't take time to memorize the names yet

dola, and another to send home soon is the guy who did the Cold Play song, but that may be due to my unliking of Cold Play in itself
