I haven't done it myself, but my guess would be e-mail notification of every new topic, or even every post. That could be useful for less active boards than this, but obviously something that no one would want to do here I'd imagine.

Don't do it! It is exactly what Skydog says, and even after you turn it off, the board continues to email you notification! Be warned.

GD, if you are getting thread emails, go to your profile, and on the front section without clicking into any links, there should be a list of threads you're subscribed to. You can remove them there.
