Except, y'know, he didn't kill anybody.
Now if you want to rephrase that to say "Guns don't shoot people - vice presidents do," you'd have an accurate headline. |

I'm sure at the time wearing the Osama mask and turban sounded like a funny prank to play on Cheney.

So, Dick Cheney was hunting (Dan) quail (Do all vice-presidents get to hunt former vice-presidents?) and shot Harry Whittington instead.
Hmmm...this story must have also involved time travel, since I thought Harry Whittington died in 1990. |

I checked the CNN story and it has an important detail left out of the original story: Harry Whittington is a lawyer. There go you liberals, leaving out an important detail to make the story sound worse for the Adiministration than it really is
(apologies to all the lawyers on the board, but I couldn't resist the easy lawyer joke...)

He finally got fed up with the "Chickenhawk" Cheney nickname, and he wanted to show all those naysayers how well he could have done in combat if he hadn't gotten those six deferments.

or a little more 'old school'....
Cheney's got a gun, he's on the run. Confusion in his mind, the blind leads the blind. Oh, Cheney's gotta gun, he's gonna shoot ya down. He's got evil in his eyes, gotta reason to despise. There's danger in the air. ... |

Just Fucking Amateur.
He's supposed to be an experienced, responsible hunter, and he pulls some college boy, first time out with a gun stunt. This is the kind of thing the drunk assholes that "hunt" on the property across the street from our place pull. In fact I am actually interested if alcohol was involved. Plus, I wonder if this was one of those "captive hunt" events, that he's taken part in before. For those who don't know, essentially what happens is a bunch of guys stand around in a field, and handlers release, near them, quail that have been farm-raised just for this purpose. I've never seen the point in that. |

Hmm....18 hour delay between it happening and it being released. If there was an 18 hour delay of a report that Clinton took a piss, Republicans would be trying to call it ToiletGate.

Without being political, what sort of charges does one normally face when involved in an accidental shooting during a hunt? Does the person that was shot have to press charges, or is it an automatic sort of thing? I'm actually curious, not trying to destroy Cheney here. Is it some kind of "reckless endangering" charge or something similar?

I really hate the way the victim is being blamed for not announcing himself. If there's one thing I learned in my Boy Scout gun safety training(probably the NRA course but I don't recall) its that anything that happens with a gun is the shooters responsibility.

The talking points on this are already coming out. There are talking heads actually saying with a straight face "This kind of thing happens all the time with bird hunters". Jeebus, how do people take these folks seriously?

Yeah, i remember reading about him shooting like hundreds of birds in a hunt like this. Was actually a bit perverse IMO. Hunting for food or for pelt or for rack is one thing, but to just shoot at hundreds of birds for fun is pretty lousy. |

And it would take Clinton 3 months of searching through the Whitehouse to find the gun involved in the incident (hey, we weren't the first to bring Clinton into the thread...)

See, I won't argue against someone enjoying hunting for sport. But stocked land with a shotgun? Isn't that like fishing out of an aquarium full of fish with 10 lines in the water?
Give me some serious tough sport, like going after wild turkeys with a bow and arrow! |

I just love looking at the different headlines about this story.
www.foxnews.com "PRESS ATTACKS" www.cbsnews.com "Questions Persist Over Cheney Shooting" Fox News... Just no shame there what so ever.

Rob Courdry Daily Show Vice Presidential Firearms Mishap Analyst: Jon, tonight the Vice President is standing by his decision to shoot Harry Whittington. Now according to the best intelligence available, there were quail hidden in the brush. Everyone believed at the time there were quail in the brush. And while the quail turned out to be a 78 year old man, even knowing that today, Mr. Cheney insists he still would have shot Mr. Whittington in the face. Jon, he believes the world is a better place for his spreading buckshot throughout the entire region of Mr. Whittington's face.
Jon: Rob, why if he had known that Mr. Whittington was not a bird, if he'd had that information Rob, why would the Vice President still have shot him in the face? Rob: Good question. Jon, in a post 9/11 world the American people expect their leaders to be decisive. To not have shot his friend in the face would have sent a message to the quail that America is weak. Jon: Rob, that is, I have to say, to my ears that is horrible that he would still do that. Rob: Look Jon the mere fact that we're even talking about how the Vice President drives up with his rich friends, in cars, to shoot farm raised, wingless quailtards, is letting the quail know how we're hunting them. Jig's up Jon, quails 1, America 0. Jon: On a purely human level, on a human level, is the Vice President at least sorry? Rob: Jon what difference does it make, the bullets are already in the man's face! Last edited by MrBigglesworth : 02-14-2006 at 01:06 AM. |
