A question about negotiating, or renegoitiating salaries...

In your opinion, if trying to rebuild your team would it be better to backload or front load the salary? The player in question is asking for quite a bit of money (5 yrs. 45 mill), but he is a solid player (77,77). He has 8 years experience.

thanks

If you're rebuilding, you may want to just trade him. His age is important, but if he is RB, 8 years is already getting too old. If you're thinking 2 years out, whoever he his will be at 10 years exp., and you could probably do better by getting younger guy(s) or picks who will have 2 years to develop. This is one option to reconsider. If you're rebuilding, backloading would be disasterous.

I figured that backloading it would be a good idea. I want to remain somewhat competitive, and he would be a good vet to have on my team. He is a DE.

Well, you either want to be competitive and win it all or rebuild, you can't do both. Otherwise, you end up in mediocrity. If you're going to try and win it all, then sign him and backload, but beware that it will hurt in trying to rebuild over the next few years. You could get a lot for a 77 DE in a trade -- think about where that will put you in a couple of years.

I understand where you are coming from, but I was thinking I could frontload it, and it won't sting so much in the future when Im trying to make my run.

Not sure what you mean by frontloading. The bonus has to be spread out equally over each year and the yearly salary cannot go down. So, there is always an effect on later years. As for the DE, provided he has very good pass rush and strength ratings, I bet you could probably get at least a mid-late 1st rounder, or no less than an early 2nd, or probably at least a 2nd and a 3rd.
