Random Friday Fun Discussion: What is the worst purchase that you have ever made?

Big ticket, small ticket. Doesn't matter. We all have purchases that we regret. Sometimes because we spent too much money, sometimes because the thing was absolute crap. And sometimes because the whole thing just plain sucked.

So, what is the single worst purchase that you have ever made? The one that makes you wish you could invent a time machine just to go back and tell yourself not to make the purchase.

Navman 635 iCN GPS. Cost about $600 (with accessories) and the routing logic on it is messed up. I can't download maps to the SD card either.

A close second place is the 1997 Eclipse I bought brand new. Nice car, but our 2nd kid necessitated a larger vehicle. We had the Eclipse for one year. Ouch.

I see it as a purchase since it's money we decided not to spend at the time. Got to do with when we got our house built. We decided at the time not to spend the $500 to get the basement insulated, thinking we could do it later. We, in fact my dad, ended up doing it a year and a half later, it cost us about twice as much, if not more and we had to do it ourselves, drilling and screwing into concrete that was a year and a half old as opposed to a week old. If you don't know the difference, you can basically put nails through a week old concrete foundation. A year and a half later, it's a pretty big fight...

Two comes to mind:

Big Ticket: A 1986 Jimmy for $5500, used on a ranch, from a friend of mine who works up in Wyoming. Totally out of place here in the city and out of character for me.

Small Ticket: Civ3 Limited Edition, $79.95.

My Roth IRA. My grandparents gave me a couple thousand bucks towards the end of the 90s. I decided that rather than piss it away on stuff, I would open a Roth IRA. Also, in a extremely atypical move, I didn't procrastinate. So I get it set up, make my deposit. The first day, the value goes up slightly, just as one might expect after YEARS of the market going up. I get a nice feeling for having done something worthwhile with the money. The next day, the stock market begins it's historic plunge. After time, between the slumping economy and yearly fees, the IRA plummets to about 40% of what I initially deposited. I should have just bought myself some stuff...

My second worst purchase was the Dreamcast...

The house I'm currently in.

(not because of the house, but because the purchase landed me here in inbreeding hell)

My 1999 Chevy Venture. I just paid it off 2 years early, but if I get 2 more years out of it, it will be a miracle. I've yet to find a friend who has owned a domestic car that wasn't a total piece of shit.

Meanwhile, my '97 Corolla just hummed past 150k miles with no sign of slowing down.

Great topic... off the top of my head I think I'll say my Rio MP3 player that had like a 40 meg capacity. This was like 1998 I guess when they were brand new. Total waste of money and time.

I also paid off my wifes college debt and then divorced her a year later, that trumps the monitor by about 34k.

I would say the Dreamcast is worthwhile just for Crazy Taxi alone.

About 6 months before getting married, my now ex convinced me to purchase half of a duplex in a not great, but not horrible yet neighborhood. Many problems with the house, but over time nothing that couldn't be fixed on our own.

5 months after getting married, she decides that she wasn't ready to be married yet. In the meantime, neighborhood has gone to shit (gov't switched apartment complex nearby to gov't assisted housing, and crime shot up), a few more problems on the home appeared, and now 7 other homes are on the market.

Place takes a year to sell, and I lose a ton of money (not including the improvements we had made to the place like new carpet). But at least I'm out of there.

I can't remember the cost, but we bought a cream colored leather sofa without thinking our 2 year old would eventually get a hold of a pen.

Not a massive outlay, but after I bought myself a fucking cool jumper in Feb 2003 for about £90. This jumper was the dog's bollocks - looked cool.

But in March 2003 I went off on an 16 month sojurn into South East Asia and Australia - thought well it might get cold occasionally, so took my fuck off cool jumper in the ruck sack as my one cold weather item. After 1 night in Bangkok (great song btw!) I realised I had ridiculously overpacked, and one of the casualties was my jumper - as I was drunk as a vicar, instead of sending it back home for some reason I just chucked it out after having worn it twice, basically at a cost of £45 a night out. Muppet.

Dola, next thing that springs to mind was the debut Hundred Reasons CD - I think of a hell of a lot more than that why I shouldn't have bothered

So a sweater is a jumper over there?

This is all very confusing. And I'm a bloke now.

I guess it's the "dog's bollocks" bit? Just means that it's the business - based on the idea that the balls of a dog must taste good as they lick them all the time. I'm guessing it's also the basis for the 'nuts' in poker.
