Culpepper to Oakland

John Clayton just stated on ESPN Radio that the Culpepper/Oakland deal is done, and will be announced in a few hours.

Oakland took Culpepper. Anyone need any more evidence that Culpepper is a seriously overrated quarterback?

ESPNEWS still has not reported this and the anchor just said that John Clayton reports that the Raiders and Dolphins are the two highest bidders.

I think that Culpepper is a good qb when he has talent around him. Miami would be a good spot with McMichael and Chambers+plus a decent RB (Ronnie Brown in his 2nd yr).

Oakland reminds me too much of the Portland Trailblazers, they gather talented players, that individually are great, but aren't team guys. Unfortunately my Skins have been in somewhat of the same mold also. Bringing in a great player does not neccesarily mean you will have a better team.

Oakland might be good, but might not. Randy Moss wasn't exactly the catalyst they made them out to be. Napoleon Harris and the draft pick may have seemed low for Moss, but he did not exactly set the world on fire.

Well regardless of what you think of Moss and Culpepper, they certainly are productive together. The NFL is way too much of a "what have you done for me lately" type of league. Culpepper is one year removed from a 4,717 yard and 39 TD year. Those are monster numbers for anyone. He has one bad year because of a knee injury and people are ready to write him off as crap.

I am not a big Dante fan, but the man can play. Not to mention that despite their poor words about each other Dnate and Randy were very good together on the field. Moss needs someone with a big arm and who isn't afraid to throw it up and let him go get it. Kerry Collins was certainly not that guy. This will be a big upgrade for Oakland.

Well that isn't what Linehan or other team officials are saying though.

While this is a signature Raider move, I don't believe we will pick up an injured qb this time around. Al wants a quick start next year to build momentum/justification for his back to the future experiment (Shell/Walsh).

Scenarios that might play out:

1). We draft Vince Young for shock value and to put butts in the seats.

2) We sign Josh Mcown.

3) We sign Jon Kitna to compete with the up and coming Walter.

To me only number two and three make sense, with three being the best option. Kitna gives you some experience and can win some games while Walter seasons a little more. While Young is the fun pick on draft day, he really will struggle early in his career. You can't take off as often as he did in the NFL and live very long. Al is mulling several scenarios around. You can't blame him because there are several variables at play such as the new bargaining agreement and how the draft picks fall.

Despite his test troubles I think it is highly unlikely that Young will be there for the Raiders to draft. You don't think they consider drafting Cutler?

I don't think Al is as enamoured with Cutler as others. He tends to lean toward athleticism. I personally think that pick would make more sense than Young, but I really hope we draft defense with that pick. I would rather trade down and pick up a few picks, but I don't see that happening. Al likes to move up the board as opposed to down. Picking up a top linebacker like Greenway in the middle of the first and maybe a G like Max Jean-Gilles in the second could really bring us closer to being a "team" as opposed to dotted with super players and thin depth/talent at other positions.

I would hope that A.J. Hawk is there at #7, but I doubt it with San Francisco letting a lot of LBs go. I see us drafting a LB or possibly Safety like Michael Huff who ran a 4.34.

He was well on his way to having a terrible year before the injury.

I don't think he'd work well with the Raiders; his success was more a product of Linehan's stewardship than his chemistry with Moss. Moss can be productive with practically anyone throwing him the ball. The Raiders just stopped doing that as the season wore on last year.

I didn't hear Clayton say anything about this on his morning radio show here in Seattle. I could have just missed it. No one called in and asked about it.

I don't think that the problems with his knee before his severe injury were the sole cause or even the main cause of his horrible year before his season-ending injury. Sure the minor injury played a role in that it limited Culpepper's ability to scramble, which is a factor in his effectiveness and allowed teams to give a bit in guarding against his run.

However, I think he really missed Scott Linehan, the offensive coordinator from the previous year. The Viking's offensive coordinator this year was Steve Looney, the line coach. Nice guy, good line coach, horrible offensive coordinator, and grossly overwhelmed trying to handle two jobs last year (line coach and offensive coordinator).

I think Linehan kept Culpepper focused on the right things, whereas this past season Culpepper looked completely lost mentally on the field.

this the same Clayton who was saying "deal is done?" I know it's just rumors but really...i don't know why anyone bothers to assume the stuff is "done" until it's actually done.

From Rotoworld:

"Daunte Culpepper - QB - Vikings

The Vikings have apparently overplayed their hand Friday by putting a false deadline on a Daunte Culpepper deal.
Both ESPN.com and Profootballtalk.com report that the Vikings overstated what they had been offered for Culpepper (a second-round pick), forcing the Raiders, Titans, and Dolphins to lose interest. Miami still looks like the best landing spot, but only if they miss out on Drew Brees. Mar. 11 - 7:55 pm et
Source: ESPN.com"

Nicely done.

Like I said before the Raiders are under a lot of pressure to win now, and an injured qb who could miss the summer workouts and possibly opening day is not what they are looking for. The Raiders handle their own ticket sales this year for the first time since moving to Oakland, and a slow start could hurt. Al is in a little less of a gambling mood as of late. My guess is Kitna in about a week. We will wait for the frenzy to die down this year before we jump into the big free agency game this year. Al believes in Andrew Walter and Kitna is just the insurance he needs.
