Culpepper to Dolphins

...Not 100% sure yet, but sources in the Twin Cities are saying Daunte to the Dolphins for a second round pick.

So does that mean Brees to New Orleans is pretty definite?

So Brees either gets his fat contract with New Orleans or heads to Minnesota to play for cheap....

Drew Brees should have been a Dolphin, IMO.

Well at least we will have a real QB this year... if the injuries allow him to play properly.

I know there is an injury risk there, but a 2nd rounder for Culpeper seems like a great deal to me...

The contract situation I wonder about.. if this was FOF I'd say good job Miami cause you don't have to pay the bonus, but knowing the NFL they'll have to give him more money...

A second-round pick for a guy who would have been the MVP two years ago if Peyton Manning hadn't been playing like he was in Madden '05 on "Rookie" difficulty is highway robbery.

Either his knee is really bad, or the Vikings are really fed up with him... Or they're stupid. Or some combination of all of the above.

I hope Minnesota goes after Brees. Brad Johnson is not the long-term answer.

This could lead to an interesting ripple effect:

New Orleans takes Brees.
Tennesse takes Leinart.
Okland takes Young or Cutler.

Culpepper threw up some big numbers two years ago, chucking the ball deep to Moss. But I am VERY glad the Raiders stayed clear of this one. He has a serious injury that will not allow him to practice until August. This is not a good situation for a guy who was having a disaster of a year before the injury if a team expects him to step in and start. He needs time and in a year where the draft is deep, the Raiders pick in the second would have been way too high. Thank you Miami!

I think he'll be fine in a couple of years if he gets good coaching and has decent receivers, but he will fumble a lot no matter what.

With bad coaching, I think he'll be awful.

Also don't be 100% surprised if the deal gets done and then falls through because of a failed physical.

To pass an incoming physical is part of the deal, if he fails, no deal.

I would have prefered Brees for the Dolphins, but for sure Daunte is way better that our past year QB's even if he needs to play in a wheels chair.

Many deals are hammered out in advance of the physical. (ala Lenny Walls DB Oakland Raiders).

Really weird year and shows how desperate the qb situation is around the league when two qb's with severe injuries are the hot commodities in free agency.

EDIT-Of course Lenny Walls was claimed off of waivers and that is a little different than a trade. So you are right. I mis-spoke. I should have said that the deal could be announced/leaked by the press and then a report of a failed physical. In other words I would worry about his knee in any pending deal.

Culpepper is a Florida guy, so this makes sense.

As a Dolphins fan, it's a mixed bag - if he's the Culpepper of two years ago great, if he's going to play like he has done most other years he'll be an upgrade over Gus, but if last year was anything to go by bleh...

And Nick Saban himself is currently viewing this thread!!!

I'll take Culpepper. I'm excited for this season, for the first season in a LONG time.

Oh, and isn't Cap'n Stab'n filmed in Miami? Just curious.

As I said in an earlier post I would hold off until this deal is complete before I would get too excited if I were a fish fan.

From Pro Football Talk:

FINS DON'T SAY MUCH ON DAUNTE

The Miami Dolphins have issued a one-sentence statement regarding the reported trade of Vikings quarterback Daunte Culpepper to the Fins for a second-round pick.

"In response to reports that the Minnesota Vikings have confirmed a trade of quarterback Daunte Culpepper to the Dolphins, team spokesman Harvey Greene said 'anything we do is contingent upon a player passing a medical exam.'"

These things get tricky when involving such a serious injury. This is what scared the Raiders (thank goodness) away from the "Pepper".

On a side note I do have to congratulate the Fins on making alot of right moves beginning with Saban. He will win a Lombardi trophy before he is done.

Stupid Dolphins,

I guess this means Saban will be a bust after all. I was hoping for better from him. They shoulda took Brees.
