Tags officially retiring from NFL.

NEW YORK -- Paul Tagliabue is retiring as NFL commissioner in July after more than 16 years on the job.

The 65-year-old commissioner has led the league since 1989, when he succeeded Pete Rozelle, and had recently signed a two-year contract extension to complete the television and labor deals.

He finally got that done 12 days ago, finishing the most arduous labor negotiations since the league and union agreed on a free agency-salary cap deal in 1992.

This could be very bad for the NFL. The commissioner's office got a little weaker when Rozelle stepped down and Tagliabue took over. Tags did a decent job, but I wonder if we're in for another recession of commissioner authority here.

I say the NFL should go after David Stern.

Did Stern come from the NFL and Bettman from the NBA? Well, I know the latter is true.

Nevermind, I found out where Stern was. An NBA lifer.

While in Florida, one of the sports radio stations said that the owner or GM of the Bucs was in the running.

No, former Buc GM and current Falcon Rich McKay is a strong candidate. I hope he doesn't get it, though.

Any other word on candidates? I have to be honest in saying I have

1. No idea how the selection process works.

2. What exactly they're looking for in a candidate.

AP: "Roger Goodell, the NFL's chief operating officer, and Atlanta general manager Rich McKay are the two leading candidates to succeed Tagliabue. Baltimore Ravens president Dick Cass is considered a dark horse."

Maybe George W. would like to step down early and take over the role of Commish.

Drew Rosenhaus. He'll get the entire league to sit out for half a season, lose a half season's worth of pay, then sign contracts for the exact amount they were already going to get had they not sat out half a season, only now everybody in the league is with a new team and he gets a 15 percent cut of the entire league.

Garber from MLS has NFL roots and some experience in running a league.

If Daivd was commissioner, would anyone believe him if he said the NFL season start on XXXX date?
