Free Email Account Suggestions (or, anyone got a GMail invite for me?)

Since we're going to be in transit/turmoil for the next few months while we relocate to Kentucky, I figure I need to get a stable, web-based email account so that I can still keep up with all of my online accounts, friends, etc. I assume GMail is one of the best free accounts out there, but if anyone has other suggestions, I'm listening. And if anyone can throw a GMail invite my way, I'd appreciate it. Thanks!

I'm in the same boat. Well not the moving that far away, but moving and needing a new email account, but not able to get a GMail invite. (I must be the only person in the world with no close friends who use googlemail.)

It's not so much how far the move is, but the fact that (a) I have Comcast now and won't up there; and (b) we're leaving our house at the end of May and won't be moving into our new house until the end of June or so. For that month, I won't have an internet account with anyone. I'll be living in so sort of temp housing (furnished apartment or something along those lines) and the wife and kids will be in Jacksonville.

Ditto.

And i most definately feel that gmail is the best option out there, even over anything you can pay for.

I was down on gmail for a while, but I changed my mind. I like it. I think have about 100 invites.

I've created like 10 gmail accounts just for random stuff for myself. But yeah, tons of invites here too if someone needs one. Though seems like you won't, lol.

and I also agree about this. I don't use my ISP's email account anymore, this one gmail account will be my one email addy until they go under, if that ever happens.

I use the manual report spam filter religiously (tiking off which ones are spam) and it has definately helped.

Oh, and I have invites too.

not one spam has stayed in the inbox on its own, they all automatically go to the spam filter so spam is a non-issue to me.

I also think that some of the spam I get could have been because of me signing up for a mailing list somewhere. For that reason, I'm not so sure I could blame gmail...

I'm having a problem with my GMail account - more like a problem with Outlook Express, actually. I've set up my GMail account so that Outlook will check it, but everytime I reboot my computer, the account settings change - specifically, the POP3 server and port. I manually override the defaults as GMail suggests, but they default back upon reboot. Any suggestions?

They have become much less frequent. I attribute the problem to living in a third world country.

I guess my next step is to email gmail for some suggestions. Either that, or find another free account that won't give me the problems this one is. I'm not going to use as my main email address an account for which I have to reset the server and port every freaking time I turn on my computer!

I'm trying to figure out why you're using outlook..

GMail web interface > Outlook

I don't want to store my email online. Unless I'm missing something.

Because I pretty much do all of my finances by internet as it is, and I don't feel comfortable keeping copies of account statements/receipts, etc., that I receive via email in online storage folders. It might not cause any more potential problems than just receiving that kind of stuff by email already does, but I don't feel like I have any control of it once I "receive" it, if it's not being kept on my hard drive.

Interesting... I guess part of this comes from me being the opposite of paranoid about this stuff...

I've heard overall that Gmail pop is not the greatest, but that doesn't matter to me because I personally see no need for it...

If it is for financial purposes, are you not worried about data loss on your PC?

I'm not all that paranoid, judging by the volume of financial transactions I do online - I pretty much pay every single bill and buy all sorts of stuff online. I tihnk it's the idea that (a) I wouldn't have a physical copy of the emailed statements on my computer, and (b) the idea that sensitive financial info I would otherwise download is stored online. At least I know that if I have a security issue, it's my fault. What happens if they fuck something up or Google goes under? I just don't like the lac of control.

Interesting... I see your point, just not how I feel about stuff.
