Chad Johnson extends thru 2011

www.bengals.com reports he signed a 2 year extension through the 2011 season today.

Let there be no more speculation as to whether he would pull a T.O.

The Bengals are a Steinbach extension and a Jones extension from being in GREAT shape for the next 3-5 years offensively.

Assuming Carson can fully recover from his injury (which I hope he does.)

.

Why? T.O. had six years left on a seven year deal when he had his meltdown. 2011 is only five years away.

From very much an outsiders perspective, it strikes me that Chad differs from TO in as much as he wants to publicise himself, he seems to understand that winning requires a team effort.

I wasn't seriously comparing Chad to TO... I was just giving Bengals fan some grief.

Okay, I finally looked at the numbers on this thing, and really, it doesnt make a lot of sense to me. While he may be "out performing" his old contract, this new bit of an extension adds 2 years onto his previous deal(which ran through 2009) and adds about 22 million in salary/bonus total "new money/salary" onto the life of the contract. Chad Johnson will be 31 years old when the last 2 years kick in. Now either I am totally misunderstanding this extension/whatever you want to call it, and I may be, but this is bad cap management 101.

It seems to me that once organizations start renegotiating deals before they have to, that they go into cap hell. I don't want to start some Bengals/Steelers fan type war, I'd be pissed if my team's front office pulled this sort of move.

CJ is a helluva receiver, but if he didnt like the current terms of his deal, what is he seriously going to do? Sit out until 2009? TJ Alphabet just got 950 some odd yards in 14 games, and is only on a 4 year 13 million dollar deal. He'll probably look for his own upgrade now.

Anytime Drew Rosen-douche walks out of a meeting with a quote like this, it's bad news for the rest of the league if they want to maintain some sense of contract stability.

Quote:
In terms of 'new money,' and just being unique from the standpoint of being able to do something for a player who still had four years left on his [existing] contract, it's really monumental," said agent Drew Rosenhaus, who was hired by Johnson a year ago to upgrade his contract "As long as I've been doing this, I've never been able to get an extension like this, basically because of the time remaining on the contract. It's historical
