I am attending a business convention next month. For the two dinners, they are requesting a jacket and Tie. I don't own a suit, so I am curious as to what type of jacket I should purchase. Should I go with a regular suit? or should I try to find a dinner jacket? I would personally prefer to get something I can wear in the future, and I dont want to get someone that is only going to have a use at nice dinners.

Why don't you get a nice navy blazer? You can't go wrong with the khaki pants/white shirt/navy blazer/great tie combo...

I would consider purchasing a suit--it's something that you could keep for a few years and is potentially useful for future professional functions like the one you are going to, interviews, family events etc.

Other than that, a navy blue sports coat is also considered a basic item that could be used for multiple occasions (or so I hear). You could wear that with khakis, shirt and tie and look presentable. You could even wear a jacket like that with jeans (depending on the fabric of the coat).
