USC Backup QB Mark Sanchez Arrested

LOS ANGELES - Southern California backup quarterback Mark Sanchez was arrested Wednesday after being accused of sexually assaulting a female student, police said.

Sanchez, 19, was arrested around 4 p.m. just north of campus and was being booked for investigation of sexual assault, police Officer Jason Lee said.

"The alleged assault occurred earlier today," Lee said. The USC student reported it to police but no other details were immediately available.

A spokesman for USC said the university will release a statement later Wednesday.

Sanchez is listed on the Trojans' depth chart as the backup to John David Booty, but is expected to battle for the starting job this fall. Booty practiced only once this spring before he injured his back and had to undergo back surgery.

Sanchez, a redshirt freshman, played the recent spring scrimmage and has been practicing with the first unit.

Boy, problems abound at SC. Maybe Pete Carroll is gonna start taking a look at NFL coordinator gigs again.

Oh to be a fly on the wall when Pete Carroll heard this bit of news. Before anybody starts, Sanchez is innocent until proven guilty.

In light of the precedent set at Duke, does this mean that USC's football program is over?

The Duke thing involved an entire team obstructing an investigation by keeping silent.

Yeah... they've been too good for too long to have NOT bent the rules quite a bit. This, and the Reggie Bush thing, is just the beginning.

I don't see what an isolated case of a player losing control has to do with the entire program...

This about the 10th incident in recent memory....It's not the actions in the past, but the punishment

1. Manny pimpslaps girlfriend and then has to do without pizza.
2. Winnie Justice solicits undercover cop and has to run extra laps.
3. Hershell Dennis is initially accused of rape while a lot of other football players smoke weed and drink - violating team rules. Nothing really happens to anyone, but Dennis is in the dog house for a long time.
4. Winnie Justice's prank with a fake gun does get him kicked out of school for a year, but it's the USC student affairs people tha drop the hammer, not Pom Pom. Perhaps Pom Pom would have done the same, but I doubt it given his history of no discipline.
5. Eric Wright is initially accused of rape but no charges are filed because she can't remember anything - hmmmmm...maybe it's because she was given ecstacy - of which 136 pills are found in the room belonging to Wright and teammate Desmond Reed. Again, nothing happens in a legal sense, but Pom Pom pretty much tells Wright to get the hell out of town.
6. Rey Maladjusted hits another student twice, yells "I own the police!" and although he is arrested nothing happens and he misses 1/2 of a game in a blowout win against the Tree.
7. Reggie Bush's parents create this huge magilla that could have teeth but only time will tell.
8. Dirty Sanchez allegedly sexually assaults a...woman, I think.

I'm sure there's more. There's the whole Chauncey Washington saga - before and after he became a "student." There is the Smith/Byrd saga which completely underscored how little Pom Pom cares about team discipline. I'm sure there's more, but all of this has occurred under P.C.'s watch, and there are still so many trojan fans in denial that it's almost sad to see.

This is beginning to remind me of the Toledo years. Same sort of approach to discipline resulted in things like Foster's trouble with pot, Paus's DUI troubles, Asi Faoa, C.J. Nisiulu, the handicap parking spot scandal, etc. I have seen this sort of thing before, and nothing good can come of it. And although I do intensely dislike USC, I would say the same thing about any coach where this sort of thing happens--this sorta stuff only encourages big time college athletes to believe they can do anything they want as long as they're talented enough.

I was glad to see Toledo go and "look the other way" policies by Bowden and a hundred Miami coaches haven't endeared me to them either.

They'll just get a slap on the wrist for everything that's going on. USC is a sacred cow, and the NCAA won't sacrafice it. If this was a smaller school, then they would come down hard, but USC? No way. Like that old Jerry Tarkanian quote: “The NCAA is so mad at Kentucky they’re gonna give Cleveland State two more years of probation”

No Charges against Sanchez

USC QB Sanchez won't face sexual assault chargesAssociated Press

LOS ANGELES -- Prosecutors decided Friday not to file charges against Southern California quarterback Mark Sanchez, who had been accused of sexually assaulting another USC student.

Los Angeles County Deputy District Attorney Richard Tacklander, who reviewed the case, concluded there was "a lack of sufficient evidence beyond a reasonable doubt."

"From the outset of this investigation, I've been confident that the facts would come to light and that investigators would confirm that I was innocent of the allegations against me," Sanchez said in a statement issued by the university.

Sanchez, 19. had been arrested for investigation of assaulting a 19-year-old woman at an apartment complex near the USC campus April 26.

Prosecutors said in a charge evaluation worksheet that a review of medical exams on both parties were inconclusive on the issue of force, making the case "essentially a 'one-on-one' allegation."

"I am grateful to the Los Angeles District Attorney's office and the LAPD detectives for their diligence in pursuing the truth and taking the time necessary to make the right decision," Sanchez said. "I look forward to continuing my education at USC and being a positive contributor to our school, student body and team."

Sanchez, listed as the backup quarterback to John David Booty on USC's depth chart, has been free on $200,000 bail since his arrest. He is expected to battle for the starting quarterback job this fall. Booty practiced only once this spring before he injured his back and had to undergo surgery.

"I'm glad to hear that this is behind Mark and that he has been exonerated," USC coach Pete Carroll said. "Mark regretted that this situation reflected poorly on him, his family and his teammates. I know he'll work hard to put this behind him. He can now concentrate on his schoolwork and on preparing to compete for the quarterback job in the fall."

Sanchez's arrest was the latest of several brushes with the law for USC players, dating back to last year.

Cornerback Eric Wright was arrested in March 2005 at a campus apartment by officers investigating reports of an assault. The district attorney's office declined to press criminal charges against Wright because of insufficient evidence.

Wright left USC amid possible disciplinary action by the school and transferred to UNLV.

Linebacker Rey Maualuga was arrested Nov. 1 for allegedly punching a man at an off-campus party, but no criminal charges were filed. He sat out the first half of the game against Stanford the following weekend as punishment.

According to some, being accused of rape is good enough to be called a rapist....

No surprise here though.l..

If this is the standard used to determine whether or not a rape occured, they may as well get rid of the law.

Just like if it's standard use to arrest someone for rape just because someone claims he/she did, they should get rid of that law too.
