NFL Titans going to run the the option

This could get inetretsing as long as they protect Vince Young and don't do anything risky.

Titans Adding Option to Offense
By Staff Report
Posted May 19th, 2006

The Titans have begun studying various option formations, with the intent of making some a limited part of their playbook this season for their first-round pick, QB Vince Young. No NFL team is thought to have used the option for about 20 years, since around the time Young was born. But this could be about to change. The Titans may be planning on installing a "Vince Young Package," one that would include the option and force opposing defenses to have to prepare for more than just Tennesee's basic offensive attack. What Titans coaches will have to wrestle with is their desire to keep Young on the bench and season him. Using him to run the offense would expose him to NFL defenses sooner than the organization would like

Could all be total bluffing to make other teams spend time learning to stop the option instead of defending what the titans really will run...i dont expect chow to option this year

I think it's understandable that you didn't see it, but there is a thread on this already that's on page 2. Sorry!

20 years sounds about right. The Chargers used it by putting Buford McGee behind center and ran the option. But it was not really a significant part of their offense. They only ran it a few plays the entire season, as far as I can recall.

I think the Titans will use it the same way the Steelers ran the option a few years ago with Kordell. It is a great Goal line or Short yardage package if you have a QB that can run it.

In Goal line situations most defenses replace those speedy linebackers with extra huge defensive lineman that can barely move. They stuff the middle, but leave the outside completely open. When the Steelers ran it Kordell Stewart made it look real easy to score with the option near the goal line.

in nfl it could work but it can't be a regular thing. you cant have the defense ready to hit the qb

and really, the way id run it would not even be dependant on the qb being able to run. use it like spurrier and bob stoops run it, short yardage load options where all the qb does is decoy the de. anything more is asking for trouble, even for vince

Didn't the Pats do it with Michael Bishop (you know... 4MVP?). I remember that they used him in some short yardage situations, but forget if the option was involved.

I don't even remember if they did it, how am I supposed to know how it worked out for them? I was just coming up with a possible refutation to the claim that no team has run the option for 20 years.

I don't ever recall them doing that. The goal line package in those days was Drew Bledsoe to Ben Coates. Pretty much the only situation Bishop came in was for end of half/game hail mary's to take advantage of his arm strength.
