Anybody else see the Blu-Ray ads this week?

I've notice in a couple prominent shows, one being American Idol, that I've seen no less that 4 advertisements for various movies coming out on DVD AND Blu-Ray formats. It's interesting timing as many have said 'Why would I buy a PS3 for the Blu-Ray capabilities when there are no movies in Blu-Ray format?'. Well, it would appear that is quickly going to change judging from the sudden surge in movies being advertised as having a Blu-Ray format.

Obviously, Sony has a hand in this timing. I would assume that we will see a large increase in the number of movies available in Blu-Ray format in the coming months to increase the interest in PS3 as an entertainment system.

Quickly followed by Toshiba rolling out the HD-DVD ads...

I think it best to wait for a dual DVD player that will play both HD-DVD and Blu-Ray formats. You know someone will make one.

Yeah, it will be interesting to see if Toshiba and Microsoft, being the only two HD-DVD companies, can make their format stick.

What's with the proper use of capitalization and punctuation?

Sorry, but I wouldn't buy a PS3 even *for* Blu-ray movies.

I don't have an HDTV, so there's no good reason for me to spend $600 on a device that'll play $40 movies.

Interesting. I would probably guess that if you still don't have a HDTV, you probably aren't one of those people that runs out to get the latest stuff when it comes out anyway. My guess is that you wouldn't go get a PS3 even if you had a HDTV.

Absolutely not. That's why I asked. If your generally not a quick adapter of HDTV, I find it a bit surprising that you would jump on a console at release. Nothing personal. Just would seem to buck the trend as both 360 and PS3's aren't much better at all visually that the previous generation if you don't have a HDTV. There's really no reason to upgrade to anything except Wii if you don't have a HDTV.

I'm not an HDTV early adopter.

I am, however, a fanatic when it comes to gaming - particularly console gaming.

I got my PS2 less than a week after launch, and at launch for every subsequent system except for the Nintendo DS.

What I was trying to say earlier is that PS3 has priced me out of the launch market, and even its status as a "cheap Blu-ray player" isn't going to affect me because I don't have an HDTV. I wouldn't spend $600 on the device for $40 movies in any event, but particularly since I don't have a TV suited to take full advantage of those movies.

Sony can talk to me when the price is significantly lower. I'll still be here.

The scary thing is those numbers are from the Japanese market, not the US one. They are from a place where Sony currently dominates.
