I miss CART
I saw the 93 Indy 500 on ESPN Classic Today - the Unser/Goodyear one.

I saw the end of that. I had no idea ESPN Classic was broadcasting past races. Great race. I had forgotten that Al Unser Sr. finished third in that race.

I remember watching that race back when it happened. I was a big Unser Jr fan at the time so I was quite happy when Andretti's car just died when he was almost a lap ahead of everyone. That was a great race.

Is that the one where Nigel Mansell was flipping out? If so, great stuff.

CART was fantastic.. All the big names.. Having Andretti, Unser Jr., Cheever, etc., back this year is great.
Hoping for Michael Andretti to finally get it done today.

Bad luck finish (IMO) for the sport overall.
The finish was a dandy, no question about it, even had me talking to the TV for something I really have pfftt interest in the rest of the year. But ... If Marco wins, you've got a story that has better legs than the one that you end up with. I wasn't particularly a fan of Mario, never really interested in Michael, but IMO any Andretti is going to generate more interest long term than Hornish, who has won two championships but isn't someone the sport can really hang their hat on.

Great ending. I knew Hornish was gonna catch him.

A great finish, but as has already been said, the IRL would have been a lot better off with an Andretti winning, no matter how good Hornish is.

No. The Unser/Goodyear race was 1992. Mansell didn't race in CART until the next year. |

I used to root against the Andrettis. In recent years, though, I've become a fan of them. I was hoping Michael would finally win, and when Marco passed him, then I was hoping Marco could hold Hornish off.

Thank God an Andretti didn't win. Both CHAMP Car and IRL are jokes now. They need to reunite and have both ovals and road courses.

Interest in this years 500 was down anyway. As an example, last year we had a two (maybe three or four) page thread on the race and a few Danica Patrick threads. This year, we have a thread titled, "I Miss CART", which I'm guessing was the feeling of at least half the folks watching this years race. Open-wheel racing needs a merger to end this suffering. The merger needs to happen in the next month or so, because even the biggest diehards are losing faith. a 2007 Indy with bumping and everyone under one umbrella would be great. Yeap, just keep Tony George out of the control booth, and use the ChampCar bodies (those IRL bodies look ugly as heck). I actually watched the poor broadcasting of the F1 race in glam Monaco (that place looks like a "dream-like" place for the wealthy). |

I was a huge antagonist of the IRL when the split first started and I thought for sure that the IRL in those days meant the end of the Indy 500. But the last couple of seasons have been impressive for the big race.
My interest in the 500 has been way up. The IRL has done a pretty good job or getting some interesting story-lines back into play and are allowing those story-lines to now build. Will Danica Patrick be the first woman to ever win the Indy 500? Was the last second loss for 19-year old Marco Andretti a look into something great or was it the beginning of a new Andretti 500 curse? Will Thomas Schekter actually live to see an Indy 500 win? (He has the worst luck when it comes to accidents but is an excellent driver) Meanwhile, I was a huge CART fan in the 90's. I guess Paul Tracy is still there and Team Green. But other than that? Put a fork in it. Nothing. Flatline. Boring. No story. No big tracks to draw interest. (Not including race-day attendance, CART and IRL both do a pretty good job with that.) All the good drivers have moved to IRL. Either there is a merger where CART concedes a few more things than the IRL, or CART will continue to drop. The bottom line is CART lost the battle, they actually lost a long time ago, it's time for CART to get over it and move on. At the end of the day, fight as you will, the one constant that will survive and is surviving is the Indianapolis 500. It's the high-ground in this fight. And without it, the fight just looks depressing to watch. For CART the writing is on the wall, "If you can't beat 'em, join 'em." I hope they do rejoin, but at this point, why should I care if they do or not? |

Actually, I don't think Schekter is an excellent driver. Talented, yes, but way too reckless, and that's why he's on a second-rate team. He's had his chances and blown them. Sort of like the young Paul Tracy, although Tracy eventually got smarter. I don't really see a lot of evidence that Schekter is getting smarter. As for CART (or Champ Car, as it is called now), it lost the battle when Roger Penske defected. Once Roger decided that the IRL was a better place for him, it was inevitable that most of the other top teams would follow. |

I was never a big Penske fan, but it was a big straw when he left. What really pissed me off, besides the original antics of TG of course, was when Andretti became a traitor. I liked the Andrettis, but will have a hard time rooting for them when the series merge.
TheLionKing, I'm disappointed in you. You watched it?? |
