Can anyone recommend a decent free anti-virus package?
Thanks... |

I used AVG until just recently when I decided to go commando. I've heard from too many people that AV software is hardly necessary. Wow, this reminded me of the condom thread for a second.

Avast, AVG and Ewido are all great. Its best to have multiple, as none of them are "the best". Still, the free ones kick the commercial products in the nuts.

Now that Ewido has been bought by AVG, that reduces the amount of competitiors in the market, but I have used AVG for 4 years, and have had very little problems with the free version.

Thanks... went with AVG, and it does the trick. What's nice is that it's even smart enough to appease the windows security center...

Another vote for AVG.. been using it for several years and I've recommended it to all my friends. Free program updates, free automatic anti-virus definition updates and good flexibility in the scheduling options.
Been "attacked" once or twice through the years and AVG has never let me down.

AVG Free too since 2 years ago, free and updated daily. Also not a resources sucker like most of antivirus software.

Oh yes, that's my main "pro" for AVG.. I bought a new computer a few months ago which came with Norton pre-installed.. I ripped that crap out within a week.. Simulating ONE OOTP-game took longer than simulating an entire week on my 3-year old machine.. post-Norton Uninstall the weeks zoomed through.. and that's just one example..

I'll eigth or whatever we're up to on AVG- not really obtrusive, not much of a resource hog, and tests well for catching virii.

Avast is great.
I use it at home and on the several computers I have at work for my employees. I trust it very much. Never disapointed me so far.

I echo the feelings for Avast. AVG is still good, but what always annoyed me was that if they updated the engine (not the virus definitions), you would have to download it from their website. With Avast, it automatically updates both of those without you having to do a thing and it doesn't use a lot of resources as well.

AVG has changed that. You can get any updates using their little downloader in the program nowadays. SI
