IWS #137: World Cup Edition RESULTS

Well, there were some very easy questions and some very hard questions, but Stupid most definitely won out.

1. Name the World Cup Winner
Brazil 24
USA 1

I don’t follow IWS all that closely, but this could be close to history. All but one person answered this question with stupid. I intended this question to be very easy and it was.

2. Name an underrated player.
Donovan 7
Totti 4
Reyna 2
Keller 2
Walcott 1
Spycher 1
Ronaldinho 1
Robben 1
Howard 1
Henry 1
Figo 1
Essien 1
Crouch 1
Adu 1

I intended this question to be very difficult and it was. The winner was decided by this question, but I am not surprised Donovan and “stupid” won out.

3. Name a high-profile team that doesn’t make it out of the group stage.
Usa 12
Italy 7
England 2
Mexico 2
Spain 1
Czech 1

I thought there would be a little more spread on this question, but there wasn’t. That American bias really shows, because I don’t consider us “high-profile” to the world.

4. Name a food spectators will eat.
Brats 14
Dogs 4
Sushi 1
Sauerkraut 1
Sauerbraten 1
Streudel 1
Pies 1
Beer 1

I expected Brats to run away with this question, and it did. The Brats category included sausages and bratwurst, but NOT hot dogs, because in my opinion (the one that counts), hot dogs are different than Brats. That said, my decision didn’t affect the overall winner either way.

5. Name a team that will make an unexpected run.
USA 13
Ivory Coast 3
Germany 2
Japan 2
Ghana 1
Nigeria 1
Sweden 1
Netherlands 1
Iran 1

I was hoping that some people would not use the same team for 3 and 5, but of course “stupid” did.

6. Name the country playing in the finals that has the best looking women.
Brazil 17
USA 4
Sweden 3
Holland 1

The wording of this question probably created the huge gap in answers. When I said finals, I meant the entire tournament, not the final game. If you didn’t know soccer, and know that this tournament is called the World Cup finals, then you may have put a team that has good-looking women and has a good chance to play in the final game. I would like to know the thought processes, so please post!

And now, the results of the World Cup Edition, IWS # 137

D'oh, I should have thought like stupid and said the US would have an unexpected run. Who else voted Japan?

I sucked at this, since I know nothing about the sport. For instance, I have never heard of any of the players listed in question 2 except who I chose. I did it as a kind of experiment. I guess I did better than I expected to, all things considered. I had the best answer in all but 2 questions - 2 and 4 (hot dogs).

Doh! I thought I had a good chance at this one. But, alas, I am no match for stupid?

USA doesn't make it out of the group stage, AND they make a run? What planet are you people from?

Internal consistency is not Stupid's strong suit.

Those were the two easiest questions in the bunch, IMO.

That was part of my thought process when making the questions...I wanted to see if people were actually giving answers or going with Stupid, and I wanted to reward those who went with Stupid.

Dead ass last. Somehow I knew that. At least I got the question about the Brazillian women right. Actually, I used Brazil 2 times and got the #1 answer.

And c'mon, its Struedel, that should have gotten more love.

By the way, I'm the one who picked USA for the first question. I figured USA was the stupid choice for all the questions.

The Dutch are going to make an unexpected run too...and I gather that Figo isn't underrated?

Yeah, I think 1 and 6 were the only questions I missed - both times I picked USA. I was more worried about 6 than 1, believe it or not.

That would be really unexpected, because it would require Angola to drop out of the world cup.

My answers:
1. Brazil - this should be a 'duh' for those who follow soccer to some extend; also, I'm pretty sure there has been an unanimous pick at some point.

2. Landon Donovan - I went with the young playmaker from team USA.

3. Italy - They're in the group of the USA and I thought that stupid would either think the USA is not high-profile or be patriotic enough to not expect them to fail.

4. Hot dog - on further review, I guess bradwurst made more sense

5. USA - USA bias means going with the USA.

6. Brazil - a bit of a gamble, but it had to comedown to Brazil, Sweden and maybe the USA. I expected that not every 'stupid' player would know Sweden is game, so I went with Brazil.

Well, any world cup since WWII we were present, we either reached the semi finals or were knocked out by the eventual champs in the knockout stages by one freak goal. So an unexpected run would be having us as champs, winning every game in the knock out phase on penalties. But after missing 2002, we could be seen as underdogs compared to 2002 quarterfinalists like the USA, Korea or Germany (no sarcasm intended).
