I would've guessed NY, MA, CA, CT, possibly NJ. Never would have guessed New Mexico. Although, I shouldn't be too surprised, since we have an out lesbian running for Sherrif.

Meh, look at what was actually measured:

New Mexico and New York share the top spot while Ohio and South Dakota are tied for last in a new state-by-state ranking compiled by three liberal advocacy groups that analyzes laws dealing with gay rights and reproductive rights.

It'd be more apt to say New Mexico is very libertarian as opposed to liberal.

That entire article is irritating. And I'm not just talking about the point you made, that the entire evaluation of liberal vs. conservative is so messed up in this country now. Less government intrusion into personal decisions has gone from conservative to liberal.

But that's not my main beef:

A conservative Republican legislator from South Dakota, Sen. Lee Schoenbeck, described the results as "a badge of honor."

And why not? That's what a federal republic is partially about. I don't need someone in South Dakota or New Mexico telling me what my laws in Texas should be. Sounds like the Florida lesbian couple did the smart thing. Of course Mr. Cianciotto doesn't realize that the freedom of choice and freedom to move in their case is a valuable right. Too busy whining.

"I believe we are on the extreme," he said in a telephone interview. "South Dakotans seem to pride themselves on independence, yet they have this legislature that comes at them with bill after bill interfering in all different kinds of ways in how they live their lives."

Hmm. Someone I agree with. I'm confused what this guy is doing in this article.

I guess my biggest problem with this is the attitude of the article that the discrepancy in laws between different states is bad. The difference is good.

I think that may have had more to do with the fact that the presidential canidate was from there then anything else. (Not sure if your comment was tongue in cheek or serious, so please ignore if it was just a joke)
