Computer Help
I have a laptop from my old company that I am using with access to my old company's files for consulting purposes. It has a Novell Login screen when you sign on, for the computer to even get the desktop. The problem is, is that I forgot my old password to log onto the computer. Basically I have left the computer on for 2 months, plugged in. It shut down by accident, so now I have to log back in, but I can't remember my password.
When I start typing my login info and password, it has an error message that says "MCshield.xe - Application Error". The Required data was not placed into memory because of an I/O error status. I click OK and continue to fillout the password info and think I got it by using one of my "usual" passwords, and it got by the log in screen and it says "loading your personal settings...." and then it says "applying personal settings...." just like it did when I logged in at work at the old job. Then it seems to stall. Nothing happens, the screen is blank for a while. Then a "Windows Explorer" error pops up. It just says Windows explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience. I pressed the data report and it says Error Signature EventType: InPageError P1:c000009c P2: 00000003 Does anyone have any idea what I can do? My desktop is not appearing at all, but I still use the internet which is weird. Why do I still have access to all, but my desktop is not visible. Its just a blank screen. The only way I got to the internet was from that Windows error message which asked me to see something on the internet so I pressed the link and it opened up my explorer page. From there, I just used my bookmarks. But I need to get to some programs on the desktop. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

ANyone????
The error message has something about explorer.exe.mdmp and an Appcompat.txt files. I ran chkdsk, scf. In the IE window, I typed C:\ so I could get to some of my spyware programs but it shuts down IE when I do that.

Do you have data you need to get off this machine? Because it sounds really screwed up.

Yup, unfortunately. I can get to everything, but the explorer and desktop doesn't show up. I have to go through an error message and loads up explorer. Then I have to use the folder view as sort of a desktop.

Sounds like explorer itself is kinda screwed up.
If you can live without it, it might be worth booting up in safe mode and removing the novell client. |

Usually the Novell client has a check-box that allows you to logon to Windows only. If you know the password for your local Windows account, but not for your Novell account this should be an option.
If that is not an option, then you probably do have to go the safe mode route. However, I think you would have to go "Safe Mode with Networking" to be able to change those settings. An alternative would be to change the GINA (graphical interface) setting in the registry back to the Microsoft one instead of the Novell one. I'll see if I can dig up that setting for you, although I would only pursue this option if the "check box" setting is not available. |

You could try this.
http://www.short-media.com/review.php?r=313 But yeah removing the Novell client might help as well. |

My workstation that has a Novell client is listed as NWGINA.DLL. I believe the proper value for this is MSGINA.DLL if you want it to boot with the Microsoft client instead of the Novell client. |

Thanks for the help guys. I called Dell and they had me to a function + boot up and it failed and he said that the hard drive has crashed. But I can still get to things which is weird, but in severe work-a-rounds to get to them. They said I should call drive savers, so I did that for data recovery and they quoted me at a price of $2,400. All I need to do is pull off some excel spreadsheets. Will removing Novell work? it does have the checkbox option, which I have it checked for "Workstation Only". How do I remove Novell (step by step for a dummy with no Start Menu button option)?

If you have a My Network Places icon, you can right click - properties, then go to the properties of your network connection, then remove the client from there.

In terms of removing the Novell client, it depends to some extent how old the client is. Newer versions are a snap to uninstall (Add/Remove programs) while older versions can sometimes be fussy even when you do exactly what Franklin notes in his post.
The workstation only option will leave the client on the machine, but since you are not logging into the Novell network you don't need to worry about that password. The registry option is a more aggressive way of achieving the same thing. Some versions of the Novell client do not expose the "Workstation Only" check-box, so this would be an alternate way of removing the Novell client from the logon process. |

But would removing the Novell portion solve the problem? It seems like I can log in to my workstation fine, it just won't load up the desktop, it just gives me the explorer error.

In my experience, the NetWare client is very invasive. Removing it would be my first step in this case, if at all possible.

Do you know what version of the Novell client you are running?
Earlier versions included a component called UNC32 (Uninstall Client32) that did a very thorough job of removing the client. That is the way I would remove the client if it is an earlier version. Later versions use the add/remove programs and that works well also. But if you have an earlier version and don't have the UNC32 program then there is a little bit more risk in removing the client. Most of the time, unchecking the options works just fine. And given that the computer isn't working well at the moment, I don't think you are risking much in just uninstalling the client no matter what version you are running or what method you use to accomplish this. |

Use chkdsk to scan and correct errors. If you can't get to my computer, CTR-alt-del and File->Run

is there a way to copy files from the command prompt to the A (Floppy Disk drive) or the D Drive (CD)? I know the directory that the excel files that I need are in.....
If so, can someone walk an idiot through that? As in at the C:\ prompt

Ok, somehow I signed onto AIM, and got one of my screen names to work. I signed onto my other AIM account on the other laptop and I am doing a file transfer of my excel sheets. It seems like it is working.

Dell came out and has replaced my hard drive. Problem now is that when I boot up the machine, it is asking me for a windows username and password. I tried my usernames and passwords and even tried the Admin, but no luck.
I also tried to start in safe mode, but the safe mode still takes me to the W2K Login screen. Is there a way to bypass this?

I would say get another hard drive and install Windows on it. Make the other hard drive a slave disk and you should be able access the files on it. That way you don't have to worry about that login screen anymore and you can access the files on the drive.
If you have another computer, then that is even better. Just move the hard drive to the other computer and make it a slave drive. Other than that, have you ever tried to contact your old company to see if they know the username and password for that workstation? It wouldn't hurt to find out.
