How would you describe your ideal system of gov't?
Not sure if this has been posted here before or not, but here's the topic anew even if it's already been discussed.
![]() My ideal system of government would rest on three branches--the aristocracy, the legislature, and the judiciary. The aristocracy would, at the national level, be a King and Queen and they would have sole control over the country's foreign policy, but have no say over domestic policy. They would be allowed to choose their successors. Domestic policy would be strictly in the hands of the elected legislature, but in turn, the legislature would not be permitted to have any voice in foreign affairs. The judiciary branch would serve much the same function as it does in the US, complete with judicial reviews of laws. On the state/province level, you would have aristocrats governing each state in the same paired status as the King and Queen and they would be in charge of handling interstate issues. Again, no say on actual intrastate policy, as that would be taken care of by the elected state legislature. Judical review, much like on the national level for the judiciary. Like King/Queen, the aristocrats would choose their own successors. Now the exact nature of the legislature I haven't figured out yet, but I would devise it in such a way that it would be an authentic multiparty system. If anyone has any questions about this, I'll answer them tomorrow after work. I have to be up early so I'm headed to bed. I'm also interested in hearing what other people have as their ideal systems of government. ![]()

My ideal form of goverment would be rule by a benign time traveller who would know the outcome from each decision before he made it ... I'm quite willing to be this ruler if anyone has a time travel device available to lend me

I'd prefer the 'Leave Me Alone' government. One whose motto is: I'll leave you alone if you leave me alone.

I wouldn't change too much of the US system. Maybe make the House proportional representation and eliminate the electoral college. Aside from that, I'd leave things the way they are in the US. I think a balance between the executive and legislative is better than the model of a lot of European countries, where the legislature ends up having too much power (since the executive comes out of that body).
Though I would probably want to return some more power to the legislature. Maybe require actual declarations of war and only give the President a 30 day leash before he had to ask Congress. Oh, and reintroduce the 4th Amendment to the Constitution .But... minor changes .

They and the Executive already have been given (taken) too much power as it is so why give the one branch that holds the pursestrings more power? I would vote to return less power to all of the branches. |

One based on strong federalism where the federal level has very limited and specific authority.

the only form of government I could agree with 100% - is one where I am supreme ruler of all (ha,ha,ha -think evil laugh)
In all seriousness and with full acknowledgment that it isn't possible - I would have the democracy of the US - but with the major change that the elected were not corrupt or swayed by influence in any way - but truly did what was best for the people. |

I think that's the key - I venture most systems of gevernment would work well if those in power were not corrupt, and truly did what was best for the people. Unfortunately power breeds corruption.

Well yes, something like that. The FCC sure as hell wouldn't have much power.

The FCC is probably the first thing I would cut completely out. Them and the DEA. And I'd give myself the power to get rid of PETA too. |
