Advice Needed: Chipped Teeth

I chipped a few front teeth last night, and they are sensititve to the touch right now... I can't bite into anything hard, just kind of pull away at food... after I eat, they have a throbbing pain for awhile too. They're not giant chips though, just little portions.

However, I'm not covered by my company's plan until August 8th... and I don't want to pay for the work needed for four teeth in full if I can avoid it.

Is there any cream or anything I can put on my teeth to lessen the pain? Or do I have to bite the bullet and pay the money?

I'd call my dentist, but I'm not sure they'd offer this information...

Are you working for the company whose plan you'll be covered by on 8/8? Or is your job starting in the future? It makes a difference as regards to preexisting condition exclusions in your dental plan.

Yeah I'm working for them right now. I see your point... I forgot about the pre-exisitng conditions. I think I read something about that.

edit: Did they put a dental preex on you when you signed up? Do they have a reason to?

If not, then you are safe to go to your doctor when you become active.

I was previously covered by my dad's insurance. I believe I stopped being covered once I graduated... and I started work a couple of weeks after graduating... I was covered by my dad's insurance since I can remember.

Yeah, I was just making sure that when you became active, you'd be ok to get coverage. It would suck to wait and then they said you had a preex on dental because of some diagnosis or procedure down in the 6 months before you joined up.

It might be radically different in Canada, but in the US the dental insurances I've had cover so little of the amount of a procedure. So basically you'd be looking at spending like 80% of the cost out of pocket anyways. You might want to at least check into how much of the coverage there will be and if it's worth waiting as long as you need to in order to get it done.

You may want to look into COBRA.

I can't really give you legal advice, but COBRA allows you--in some circumstances--to pay back premiums and get coverage for medical plans that you left. So you may be able to get coverage from your dad's plan.

Ask your Dad to ask the HR people at his company about it.

There is a product you can get from any drugstore that you cna use to cover chipped teeth, lost fillings, lost crowns, etc. I don't know what it is called, but it is like a putty that hardens when exposed to air. I used it when I lost a temporary crown and it did the trick so far as covering my bad tooth. It's only recommended for a day or so however, so get your chipped-tooth ass to a dentist.

I didn't realize the Canada thing either. I'm assuming universal health care doesn't cover dental?

Good to hear it. Another avenue is to go to a hospital emergency room for treatment (if it needs an emergency fix, like this may, then the work would be covered under medical rather than dental). At a minimum, a doctor ought to prescribe medication and the proper fix until you were on the plan.

That's how you can often get around not having a dental plan in Canada. You won't ever be able to get cosmetic or preventive stuff, but if you take a hockey puck to the face, you can go the emergency room and they will fix you up under regular medical. Any acute condition (i.e. any kind of pain, and the got to treat you).
