Anyone from Phoenix/Glendale?

My brother and I are going to the Cardinals/Lions game in November. Wondering if any locals could suggest an area/hotel to stay at for 3 nights or so. Are there hotels in the area of the new stadium? Or is there a nice burb area where they have a lot of hotel/commerce set up? Thanks.

Agreed. Watching the 8-1 Cardinals play the 1-8 Motor City Kitties will certainly be like watching grass grow, to most. However, funny enough, my bro is a near lifetime Cards fan, and as a Viking fan myself, there are only 2 other teams I can think of that i'd rather root against.

Not from there and I can't give any specific information, but was there last year for spring training and saw a game at I think the Padres facility and we saw the new stadium on our way there, maybe 5-10 minutes away. right next to the Padres facility was a huge strip mall with tons of chain restaurants like PF Changs, TGI Friday, Red Robin, etc. and some decent hotels as well.

My folks are actually moving out to Scottsdale within the month.

Thusly, I'll be visiting every so often. Wouldn't mind trying to hook up with some FOFCrs in the area while I'm out there.

We're thinking about 3 nights hotel (Fri-Sun nights), and total for 2 guys of $300 of so for the hotel? Not sure what the rates are like down there, but we thought for $100 a night for 2, we could stay at a fairly nice place.

Any of you that are down there, we would definitely like to meet you for a beer one of those nights we're there. Once we get down there, i'll find this thread and pm you guys.

not a lot close to the stadium as it's not all built up yet, Steve Ellman promised it would be done 3 years ago. If you go to Peoria (to the East) or Litchfield (West) you can find a place to stay. Then you only have to jump on the freeway to get there.

Ahem.

The Sheraton Crescent is right off I-17 and Dunlap. Not exactly the nicest neighborhood, but not exactly the worst either. It's not in a location where you can easily walk to restaurants from it.

Ah, thanks Farrah. Is there a particular hotel or area that you would recommend for us to stay? I guess we're willing to splurge a bit for a nicer place (I guess about $400 between us for the 3 nights would be splurging, heheh). My brother also mentioned for me to check for a hotel that might have a shuttle to the stadium, airport, etc. I have done some checking online today, but i would much rather get advise from a local resident, like yourself.

Hmmmm..I wonder why no one mentioned Chandler. Before we had moved to Phoenix many moons ago, we would often stay in Chandler since there are a number of restaurants and shopping places in that area. Really nice place to stay at and it is not much of a drive to downtown. Actually it is about a 20 minute drive, if I remember correctly, to drive to the stadium.

However, if you are going to be there during a work week, I don't suggest Chandler since the traffic would suck doing the morning and evening commutes from work. So I would suggest the Homestead Suites in Scottsdale. My mother would go to one of these when she visited from San Diego and they are cool since they have a kitchenstocked with silverware, kitchen. Dry cleaning is also available and this particular one is near a number of restaurants.

The new stadium is in Glendale... bit of a longer hike from Chandler... but Chandler is a pretty nice part of town, to be sure.

Doh....should have paid attention to which stadium he was talking about. I was thinking ballpark for some odd reason. Okay, Homestead Suites would be your best bet then.

Nice....if we would have stayed there, I would have definitely looked to live there. I have always liked that area even moreso than Glendale and Scottsdale.

Few years ago, I'd be with you. But now? Hell no! The Cards are one of the most exciting offenses in football with Boldin and Fitzgerland. Now they add Edge to the backfield. Doesn't matter if Warner is still under center, that team will put up a lot of points.

And Detroit... well they got Martz this year. Be interesting to see them with a competant offensive coordinator.

Hmmm. I don't know the area around the new stadium very well at all. Sorry. I live way south, in Ahwatukee. That area is way north so I rarely venture up there. Only reason I knew about that Sheraton was because I've attended a ton of seminars in that area and finding places to walk to for lunch was a pain.

Maybe try checking out hotels in Tempe - they'll be losing a lot of business since the Cards won't be playing at Sun Devil Stadium. They might have fan packages to attract business. Plus Mill Avenue has great night life.

I wouldn't exactly describe Casa de Rahn as a 'ranch'. More like a 'zoo'. But you're welcome to a tour, we'll even feed and water you with the rest of the animals.

FYI. Regarding the original question, there's not much in the immediate area of the stadium (though construction is happening fast and furious to rectify it, by all appearances. The Coyotes Arena and the Cards new home was pretty much plopped in the middle of cotton fields. There are one or two places in Avondale/Goodyear I know of to the southwest (about 15-20 minutes from the stadium), and I believe there's some hotels to be found in the Arrowhead Ranch area (20-30 minutes from there). There is also a ton of stuff along I-17.

The west side is growing so fast residentially that commercial development has lagged behind.

That Sheraton that Farrah mentioned is pretty nice; I've had a few conferences out there. They give you a good breakfast. It also wouldn't be too far from the stadium by freeway. I would second hanging out in Tempe on your non-game day. Mill Ave. is a great bar crawl. The Irish pub on Mill, Rula Bula, is my sister's designated headquarters when she is in town.

Also just thought of this

if you come early, like the day before the cards/lions game there is an ASU home game vs. UCLA..last home game for ASU

and...don't know if you have cards/lions tickets, but they might be hard to get too. season tickets are sold out and to get single game tickets you have to get on the "waiting list" for season tickets and put down a $200 nonrefundable depoist for each ticket you want...to be applied to your future season ticket purchase.

Rula Bula rocks. I take all of my out of town guests there. And of course my very Irish boss drags me there whenever he picks where we go for lunch.

We have Cards tickets. I think my bro said something like 40 yd line? Can't remember, but I recall him saying he had VERY good seats.

That ASU/UCLA game sounds very appealing. I'll have to throw that at bro, although he's not as big a college fan as I. Do you think we would be able to get a couple tickets to that game when we get down there? We're flying down Friday and leaving Monday. And thanks for all the tips guys/gals.

You'll be able to get seats for the ASU game. Maybe not great seats, but decent ones. If you have a few days ahead of time, go to campus and check the bulletin boards... maybe you can find a student selling tickets.

should be able to get seats.

my friend actually is selling his 2 w/ a parking pass as he has a wedding that day to attend. He sits in the South Endzone.

I might even end up w/ 2 extra (own 4 season tickets to ASU now)..as we get closer I'll know more.

Did you ever go? How does the heat-humidty combo feel vs. Chicago? I'm ready to trade Ohio's shitty weather for something warmer, but think the summer heat might to a tad to much.
