spam e-mail increasing?

Anyone else noticing a big uptick in spam e-mail in their account(s) recently? For a while my Hotmail account was pretty clean - I'd get 1 or 2 spam e-mails in a month. About 2 weeks ago or so that spiked up to about 3-4 per day - most of which are generated with gobbledygook.info domains (i.e. something like [email protected]).

I've also been seeing more spam showing up in my gmail filter, and just got my first genuine spam e-mail on that account that the filter didn't catch.

Are other people experiencing this as well, and do any IT people out there have some insights as to why this might be the case?

The spammers are getting desperate, I think.

Spam filters are getting pretty good, and the return on spam mail has got to be decreasing. I'll bet we're getting close to critical mass on spam.

I've seen a rise in the last few weeks too.

Because my email address is listed on my web site and forum I get onto everyone's spam list. I abandoned my bigpond account about 12 months ago when I was receiving some 400 spam messages a day. I couldn't really filter them because of missing customer emails and had to scan through them all (using mailwasher). I ran a second account that built up last year but only to around 80/90 a day but then dropped to around 40 over the course of this year. It's held at that for about three months but I have seen a 10/20% or so increase in the last 3 weeks. My gmail account, like yours, has seen a recent (last couple off weeks) increase to around 6/7 a day though nothing yet has broken through the filter.

Russia has now become a major source of spam. I even get member registrations on my forum with *@*.ru email addresses.

I have noticed a substantial increase in the amount of SPAM I have been getting over the last month. It has gotten to incredibly annoying levels.

I've noticed an increase too over the last week or two. I rarely used to get any spam in my Hotmail account, but I've been getting a handful here and there of late.

I've noticed it too, I used to never get spam, ever, on my gmail account, now I'm getting about 1 every day or two that makes it through the filter even.

And my hotmail account, which was always pretty bad for spam, has gotten ridiculous of late.

Spam sucks.

I noticed the same thing in my hotmail account. Hopefully M$'s filters can improve to counter it, cuz it's pissing me off.

I've also gotten a lot more spam lately. Gmail is still good, but Hotmail gets a ton. It seems like obvious spam to me too, which is why I don't understand how it gets passed the filters...

I get over 100 a day, but I have 2 work email address plus I'm the administrator (so that makes 3). Bots are probably getting these email addresses off our website too. And then bots randomly email sites with common names like Bob@, Steve@, John@, etc, so I get those too. I'd say 99% gets caught by the spam filter.

At work: None (we have very strict e-mail filters)
At my school address: Used to get a ton, but I use the school's filtering program, plus every time I get an e-mail in Outlook I add it to my blocked senders list, which actually *seems* to be helping.

Very litte, about 10-12 per week - and that's on 2 long-running accounts: att.net and adelphia.net. They do a good job filtering out stuff (just like at work). I shudder to think if I were on aol, yahoo or hotmail.
